Wow, so many liked my NNTP Suggestion!  hehe, <checks astrological tables>

If you want to see how WIN Server looks/works, sign in to my site at www.checksix.net  and try it out.  Its not inexpensive (WIN Server) but very powerful.  The NNTP addon they just developed (I used a 3rd party's version, which I feel is better at this point) is nice.  The only catch is how many users can be logged in at once (i.e. Node Count).  I have a 12 user license, thought of upping to more, but I've never had a problem with it since upping from 4 to 12.

So, if HTC has questions about it, setup, etc, ask away.  It has a telnet side as well..after all, this is the latest incarnation of Wildcat BBS, if any of you folks were BBSer's in the early/mid 90s!

Another vote for NNTP. I only read this NG at my office on a T1 line....home is dial-up and I don't read here from there with all the pics people include with their signatures.

November November Tango Papa!

Please, please, please switch from this BB software to something that supports NNTP!

Waiting 40 seconds for a thread to load only to discover it's filled with posts from the FDBs whining about how small their noodlees (penii? penum? dicks?) are...

Oy.

I think some of the suggestions above are for a web-based UBB that has the OPTION of NNTP access.  Correct?

This would keep all of us happy.

I don't know how much brainpower and programming talent there is to spare here.  However, I can tell you that running an NNTP capable server is trivial.  I have been running one for a year or more, where qute a few AH/WB/AW players contribute.

What is nontrivial is developing a HTTP interface that will work in most browsers and still maintain all of the goodies that UBB/HTML provides for.

If anyone would like to take a crack at developing something like this, I'd be willing to help.

Hey TK... look up a few posts.  Such a thing already exists.

It's a web BBS with an NNTP plugin.  That would be sweet.

I know.  There are several such products.

But it's "not inexpensive".  Ideally, the community could build something like this cheaply.  Cost ought to be a huge concern, since I don't think HTC is quite as well off as Ion Storm was.

Besides, I've got the hardware, and half the software (the NNTP half anyway ;-) ) and reasonable bandwidth (DSL).  I could host HTTP stuff as well on that box, if we wanted to take a crack at developing something.

By the people, for the people or something like that. ;-)
