« on: May 31, 2004, 08:52:07 PM »
Anyone planning on doing a skin of The Kidd's P-51B or P-51D?

Y'know, I would like to see Ralph Kidd Hofer P-47D of 334th 4FG in 1943, but I dunno if someone can make that skin.

You mean like this? :D

I like the P-51D better, but the P-47 would be nice also. Are you sure he flew a D model Jug?

Cheers

Yeah, that the one.

It's nice to see him fly on P-51D, but he never flow any P-51D and he was KIA in July 1944 near Mostar, Yugoslavia, some 500 kilometers from were he was last seen near Budapest, Hungary.  He flow P-51B with letter/number QP*X and died on his plane.

Yes, He flow P-47D and later, it was lost with another pilot at the controls on December 2, 1943 and probably killed the pilot.

Yes you are correct Rafe35, he did not fly the P-51D, and did fly the P-47D.

The book " THE LAST OF THE SCREWBALL ACES " by Troy White, is the best reference out there for info. on The Kidd. When he went down near Mostar, he was not flying his assigned a/c, as he would not take his shots needed for the shuttle mission to Russia. Another pilot was flying his assigned a/c. He was able to fly a back-up role, at the last minute, and when no one turned back with problems, he tagged along anyway.

Here are the planes assigned to him according to the book....

P-47C s/n 41-6484, QP-L "The Missouri Kidd-SHO ME "(assigned this a/c in late October or early November of 1943. This a/c crashed on December 2, 1943 killing F/O John P. McNabb)

P-47D s/n unknown QP-L (he flew this from Dec.1943-Feb.1944)

P-51B-5 NA s/n 43-6946, QP-L

P-51B-5 NA s/n 43-6646, QP-L

P-51B-10 s/n 42-106924, QP-L " Salem Representative "

Cheers
