109 Slats
« on: June 12, 2004, 01:45:57 PM »
Having never flown a 109 myself I obviously can’t speak from experience. However, since the last patch the 109 slats on all models open with such force as to shake the aircraft about.

There has been a real change it the way the slats deployed in previous versions compared to the last patch.

I don’t know if this is a "feature" or a bug so I am starting this thread to help figure out how the slats "felt" when they deployed. I also havent flown any of the other planes with slats in AH so I cant say if they have change as well.

First here's an article from the 109 Lair that describes the technical aspects of the 109s slats.

http://109lair.hobbyvista.com/techref/systems/control/slats/slats.htm

Here is a link to the Finnish Virtual Pilots Association

http://www.virtualpilots.fi/hist/109myths/#slats

Now the questions I have are:

1. Would the slats slam open with enough force to yaw the aircraft?  I have read of "aileron biting" on the 109e but nothing that stated yawing would occur.

2. On some occasion in the game the slats will open and close rapidly over and over. Even though it "appeared" I was holding steady speed and AoA through out the turn with the ball centered.

3. On occasion in a high speed turn both slats opened suddenly and "pushed" me into black out. I have read of "elevator notching" but nothing like what I experienced

Nothing that I have read sheds any light on the questions I have. Since there was an obvious change in how the slats deployed in the current patch I thought that maybe some of those more knowledgeable then me could help answer some of my points...

Very interesting links.

I'm afraid I'm not more knowledgeable than you but I have experienced everything you've mentioned in the F4 and to a lesser degree the G2.

The F4 is wild in mid to slow turn fights, I genuinely thought my stick had started spiking after the latest patch, then thought it had something to do with the change in ailerons mentioned in the readme.

All I can say for certain is that the 109 FM has changed alot this patch, due to what I cant say but certainly feels like the slats. I've had a go in a La5 and felt the effect the slats were having, not that different from the 109 but with only 10% of the violence.

The pilots interviewed in the 2nd link seemed to like them though, drunk or not. Cant say I feel the same.

The idle power stall characteristics of the aircraft are very benign and affected little by undercarriage and flap position.  Stalling warning is a slight wing rock with the stick floating right by about 2 inches.  This occurs 10klph before the stall.  The stall itself is a left wing drop through about 15 degrees with a slight nose drop, accompanied by a light buffet.  All controls are effective up to the stall, and recovery is instant on moving the stick forward.  Stall speeds are 155kph clean and 140kph with gear and flap down.  In a turn at 280kphwith display power set, stall warning is given by light buffet at 3g, and the stall occurs at 3.5g with the inside wing dropping.  Again, recovery is instant on easing the stick forward.  One interesting feature is the leading edge slats.  When these deploy at low speeds or in a turn, a 'clunk' can be heard and felt, but there is no disturbance to the aircraft about any axis.  I understand that the Bf109E rolled violently as the slats deployed, and I am curious to know the difference to the Gustav that caused this.

I have read accounts of the 109 slats could deploy unevenly if the pilot was in an unco-ordinated turn.  This would cause the plane to yaw back and forth making aiming very difficult.

Crummp that was associated with the Emil, with the F model and upwards the automatic wing leading edge slats were much improved and they operated smoother.

Pyro replied in the AH2 Bug Forum... It turns out it was a bug but even so if any one has anything to add to this thread please continue...
