Okay, joke aside. I'm really ready to do a P-38 skin. In fact, I've been ready for quite some time - except I've haven't found the right plane to skin yet.

A plea to the P-38 enthusiasts.

 Find me....

 A silver P-38L or P-38J (won't accept a J before J-25) which is like this:

 ..

 and I'll skin it.

There are so many limitations existing in this particular texture, that I actually couldn't find any plane that was skinnable. That's why that I couldn't skin a P-38 for you guys, even when all the really time-consuming stuff like panel lines and rivets, were finished over a long time ago.

You couldn't just change the metal color to a greenish color like some of the new P-51 skins or the old P-51B? That'd be nice when fighting it low, make it somewhat harder to see that glass tail anyway.

It's all about aesthetics DipStick.

The Olive-drab P-38s didn't have a black anti-glare surface outlined in yellow, because they didn't need one of those in fact.

Basically, as an 'artist' ;) trying to ignore a wrongly depicted feature which is clearly visible at first glance, is like trying to swallow a tabasco bomb laced with wasabi.

*Shrugs* - really, if I can't do it right, I won't do it at all. So far, there is no way to do any of the P-38 skins "right". The only way to do a "right" P-38 skin, is to find a P-38 which fits all of the above criteria, so it can slip past the problems.  :D

Rgr that. I didn't know the anti-glare on the hood had a visible yellow outline. Oh well it was just a thought, only thing I've wanted to see on the 38 since day one. Figures it won't work.  <-- for nopoop!

Kweassa ...

The effort is much appreciate, but to find a "historical" P-38 that meets the criteria that you have specified, is more than likely ... impossible.

As much I would love to see you work your magic on the P-38, I would suggest that you wait until HTC straightens out the anomolies on the P-38 before you put some serious time in on this endevor.

OUCHHHHH!!!!

Maybe there is SOME way that HTC would let you skin one that is "Close to real?".  I love the 38 and would love to see a different skin or two out there for it.

Regards,

And keep up the EXCELLENT WORK!:)

Oh come on! Surely there would be at least one US pilot who is shy and quiet enough to use default colors without any nose art or indicidual markings at all!! :D

(but then again.. what's the point of skinning something like that...??)

 ...

Ahhhh phooey. You're probably right. I'll guess will have to leave it in the shelf for the moment. Maybe I'll just submit a new default skin to be used for the time being.

From:
http://p-38online.com/p38l.html

Using a more obtainable engine, Lockheed incorporated the V-1710-F30 engine into the P-38 L. It produced 1,600 hp at maximum power, and produced a normal rating of 1,100 at 30,000 ft. The pilot also had more selections for power settings inside the cockpit, and these settings could also be set on automatic. A new flush landing light was inserted in the leading edge of the wing, and replaced a retractable one in previous models. Enhanced external fuel tank system was also used, and consisted of new fuel booster pumps. External fuel capacity was increased to allow two 300-gallon tanks to be used. This increased the total fuel capacity to 1,024 gallons.
One interesting improvement was the installation of a new tail-warning radar system. It would signal the pilot through flashing lights and bell sounds when an aircraft was in close proximity behind the aircraft.

I want tail radar in AHII !!
