P&W R-2800 fuel consumption question
« on: June 13, 2004, 04:39:39 PM »
I took an F6F for a ride and noticed the fuel consumption rate (at FBM=2) to be 485 GPH (a few k alt).
The F4u-D using the same engine also drinks 485 GPH.

But the P47 still using the same engine (and same RPM and about the same MP) drinks 550GPH (all at full mil. no WEP).

I'd expect the P47 to be close to the F6F/F4u, but it drinks quite a lot more.

I haven't tested it in high alts where the super turbo charger makes a difference, but is the P47's engine THAT much inefficient?
it givers 2000/550=3.64 HP/GPH.
while in the F6F 2000/486=4.12
and a P51D engine gives 1695/300=5.65

(I don't know at what altitude these power outputs were measured)
