Graphics engine? AH future ?
« on: June 05, 2001, 02:10:00 PM »
Given that I have recently read about how WBIII's graphics capabilities are not due to "in house" or owned technology but based on an licensing deal with Chris "Vor" Babcock....  has anyone at HTC thought about licensing this engine as well?

Make it a matter of who can best leverage the engine?

things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Licensing that engine requires HTC to give VOR a cut of what HTC is currently making.

6 people becomes 7.

IMO, yes the WW engine can deliver better graphics. Just not significant enough imo to warrant the MUCH larger leap in required specs to play AH though. Talk about choking off the player base abruptly.
AH will need to keep up to date on that front however as they begin thier third year with this gfx engine.
But WB III has inferior environment effects , no gun cam (yes I use it. a lot) and those clouds are....<turns head> yuck.  WB people CAn however do custom skins. <raises index finger to HTC to emphasize that point>

I feel I must give HTC A LOT of credit for increasing the game effects and better graphics as gradually as they have. Superfly and Natedog really do crank out top notch art.

<best "Scotty" from Star Trek voice> Wouldya jezz look'eh the Tony!!!

One area where aces high is very weak is the terrain IMO. Not the terrain itself, but the lack of ground objects. Other onlime sims have a MUCH KMUCH better sense of altitude and speed at low alt due to their much much superior ground clutter.

Lets face it guys. a 1.2 GHZ athlon cpu costs 150 USD. People that are paying thirty dollars a month for the game have got to have at least a bit of cash, so the sys reqs should be reasonable. HTC isn't aiming for the deer hunter crowd here.

I'm satisfied with AH as it is currently Zigrat. That's why I'm paying 30$ for it. GS4/1 doesn't make a lot of money. I can afford AH, and I can afford to pay for college. I can not afford to upgrade for eye candy.

While its true that a 1.2mHz machine can be had for cheap....does that mean that an online game should alienate the other 80% of the population?

I currently use an Athlon 600, and its more than fast enough, but if they doubled the system requirements, Id leave..not because I cant upgrade, but because an online game should not "BE" the benchmark.  There needs to be a very broad range of computers that can play it effectively.  My 600 is faster than many peoples 800-900 machines because I have tons -o- ram, a expensive video card and optimizations that the average person is less apt to do.

Right now, aiming at anything above 400-600 mHz would preclude too many people.  Remember, the 600's were the hot ticket only 18 months ago.

Lightsourcing in WB3 looks crap.

IMHO on first glance WB3 looks ok, look a little closer and it shows some ... 'issues'.

I can not afford to upgrade for eye candy.

I bought a Celeron II 600 mhz and FCPGA slotket this week for $77.00 - popped it into my Abit BH-6 and set the FSB to 112 mhz - a cheap 1008 mhz. Next month I'm grabbing a GF2 MX 32mb for $90.00.

Upgrading doesn't have to be expensive.

Yes but WB111 has bombable trees.  Wupeeeeee!
I don't know anyone who plays these games to blow up trees.  Still can't believe they did that.  Trees are tough targets I guess. HEHE.
