Skin texture size suggestion
« on: June 06, 2004, 05:45:41 PM »
The latest versions of the AH2 beta have capped skin textures at  512 res rather than 1024. While this has undoubtedly helped with screen freezes it also makes the skins look blurry up close.

As a compromise would it be possible to have a seperate maximum size for your own plane's skin as against other players'? So you could look out the cockpit onto a 1024 res skinned upper wing on your plane while other aircraft (which are rarely close enough for the detail to show) stay at 512 or less to stop the freezes.

wanna shoot for 2048 skins...lol

fry some vid cards??? :)

Pondering this - Are the skin sizes going to be going back to 1024 or is all the artwork that has been done by staff and skinners going to have to be redone? Least we'll be one up on ah3 - when 1024 might be minimul texture size :)

Selector, how does this stop you having 1024 skins? Just set both values, your own plane and other planes, to 1024. The idea is that those players who have an unacceptable stutter issue with 1024 skins on other planes could still get the visual benefit of one on their own plane.

The wording of the readme seemed to imply the 512 res wasn't a permanent change, but they were very careful not to commit to anything. I've got to admit, I'm kind of fed up that all that work positioning panel lines and rivets just so might have been a waste of time.

I already asked that question to HiTech after posting that request here serveral times, the answer was a simple 'no'. May be all the textures in the texture cache need to be the same size. If this is not the case and several textures resolutions can work together, then the cache may be managed as follows:

1 - a big precached segment with all the textures for every vehicle/plane using the pre-selected texture resolution, for example, all to 256x256.
2 - a reserved segment for own plane/vehiche that would be filled dinamically when your plane/vehicle spanws with the texture resolution pre-selected for own plane/vehicle.

Personally, I dont care about the text quality of any plane except own plane. A moving target at 200 yards seems the same with unlimited, 512x512 or 256x256 textures.

I had np running "unlimited" textures. I am not sure how it affected others but couldnt they just scale down?

In fact I had better fps with the unlimited textures then in the last 2 patches. fps swings from 100 (refresh rate) to 70. In previous patches it was steady.

I am not going to rework my templates at this point. I will just wait to see what happens.

Thanks Godo, I must have missed those posts. Personally I found the texture freezes irritating rather than ruining the game for me. It may be that my system suffers less than some due to its RAID HDD setup, it possibly loads the textures faster. Haven't noticed any freezes since the change to 512.

My guess is HTC keep to 512 during the initial changeover to reduce the chance of new AH2ers developing an initial negative impression of the game due to freezes. Then they'll quietly reintroduce 1024 in a later update.

Think the plan is to reduce skin size to 512.

Hate to say it but I think the skins are whats causeing the freezes period.

Disable them for a day and I bet it pretty much goes away, it seems most only get texture freezes when around the 6 or so planes that are enabled with skins.

While skins are nice the only one you actually see is your own therfore I dont see them as a major impact.

Yeah Yeah Yeah i know but IL2 this and IL2 that, but IL2 only has a max of how many players per room? and is what a how many mb BOX game?

While my computer handles AH2  no problem, I'd opt for  performance over pretty anyday, thats what makes Aces High what it is the high volume of players in one arena IMHO.

I know  SHUT UP Jim.

My situation is very wierd.

My system is AMD 2400+, 1Gig RAM, Win XPpro SP1, Radeon 9000pro/64

With unlimited textures I had no problem of any kind, FPS going from 110 max to 40min.
Now - after the last 2 patches - i get slower FPS and sluttering problems.

MAh !
