Museum of Flight: Personal Courage Wing photos
« on: June 06, 2004, 09:44:05 PM »
I visited the grand opening celebration at Seattle's Museum of Flight's new Personal Courage Wing today (June 6th).   All I can say is WOW!   The Champlin fighter collection is there and displayed in all of its glory.

Check out the photos at my site avphoto.com

I look forward to going.  But let me ask, Why does the atmosphere look so dark in there?

Some Art director wanted "dramatic" lighting.......

or they have a night fighter bias

It was somewhat dark in there.   The lighting I suppose was for mood effect.

I was there too, spent almost 8 hours in the museum.  My wife and son got to ride in one of the vintage biplanes there (for a fee of course:lol ) and I was given an opportunity to sit in the FM2 that was flown in by the CAF for the event.

Pics will be forthcoming but my digital camera broke a month ago and hasn't come back from pentax so everything is being developed.

Wife took the shots of me in the FM2 so I hope at least one comes out clear-I'm not counting on it.

I think the darkness of the new wing is due to the lack of any ceiling - all of the stucture, wiring and a/c ducting was painted black rather than installing some kind of lowered ceiling.  The dramatic lighting keeps your eyes on the subjects and not on the warehouse-like environment that the airplanes have been placed in.   The new museum wing does have a unique "feeling" that sets it apart from the other parts of the museum or even other aviation museums.

Definately worth viewing if you're in town or just visiting.

Somebody from our Boards works there, He invited me to visit when I went to Oregon a while back but never made it up there...

I'm sure he can answer why its so dark.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

The area would be a great place to hold a Con.

The whole museum is huge, they have that tent thing outside that can hold a couple hundred folks.

HTC should look into that for the future.  Flights into Seattle tend to be very cheap as well.  In the recent past I have been able to get seattle to Dallas round trip for under 175 dollars.

The very last Air Warrior Convention banquet was held at the Museum of Flight in 2001!  The facilities and catering are outstanding.  The entire museum was reserved and all guests had complete access to the facility.  General Robin Olds was the main speaker and Col. Bill Holloman (Tuskegee Airmen) was in attendance.  The cost would be prohibitive for a multi-day event even if a banquet room sized portion was reserved rather than the whole museum.  It would certainly be worthy of at least hosting a NW MiniCon.
