Need help setting CPU/FSB speeds
« on: June 08, 2004, 11:27:28 AM »
I have just built a replacement for my brother's creaking 1999 PC. He's not a high end user and needs it as a business box - email, web browsing plus a few other apps.

I built it with the A7N8X-X mobo - doesn't have RAID, but that's OK. AMD XP2600 processor - which is supposed to run at 2GHz, or even 2.083GHz (quoting from memory). Memory is a PC3200 400MHz DDR - 512MB.

So this system is not so different from my own system. But I cannot seem to get the CPU to run at 2GHz the way I have mine set up. I have that same processor and memory.

My mobo settings are these:
  • CPU External Frequency = 200
  • CPU Frequency Mult [Menu]
  • CPU Freq. Mult = 10
  • System Performance = Optimal
  • Memory Freq = By SPD
  • Result = 200MHz
If I apply these to the new PC setup, it hangs. The best I've been able to do is 133MHz for the CPU external freq., and 12.5 for the multiplier (the highest option) giving 1553MHz. But I can't get 2.0GHz.

One weird message I get from the BIOS at boot up is "Memory Speed 200MHz in Single Channel Mode". What's that then? Duff memory?

Bus clock on my mobo is 200MHz. On his, it comes up at 100MHz. The mobo jumper is set to allow up to 400MHz - I checked the jumper.

Any ideas?

Beetle,
"AMD XP2600 processor - which is supposed to run at 2GHz, or even 2.083GHz (quoting from memory)."

Maybe you shouldn't trust your memory.  The only 2600+ that I am aware of is the Barton which runs at 1.9 and a FSB of 333.  A multiplier of 11.5 x 166 = 1909.  You might want to try this setting for both computers.

"

That message is perfectly normal.  It will say the same only Speed will be 166 with the correct stock settings.

:aok:aok

The problem was duff memory - MY memory. ;) It's the XP2800 that runs at 2.083GHz. I applied the settings you suggested (166x11.5) to the new PC, and it booted right up. Belarc reports the CPU as 1950MHz, which is fine. When I realised that my system was overclocked, I changed it down a gear - same 166x11.5, but on that one Belarc reports speed of 1.9GHz.

In both systems in the Advanced Chipset Menu, the Result speed is still given as 200MHz - I take it that's the memory speed?

Glad that fixed your CPU settings.  Now you should go back into the BIOS and set the memory speed to 166, also.  PC3200 is just a rating not a required speed.  Your BIOS will have some memory settings such as "automatic" , "1:1" , "100%" , or "user defined - 166" which will set it back to 166.  AMD's run much better with synchronous bus speeds.

The memory option allows only two settings - By SPD, and Auto. Am I looking at the right thing?

If you set it to Auto, it should run at the same speed as the CPU which is now 166.  You may also setthe speed to 166 and it may allow a few more advanced settings such as latency, timings, etc.  Either should accomplish what you need to do.

PC3200 should run at 200MHz system bus no problem, although your gonna have to bump up Vdimm voltage and Vcore voltage

Yep! Works perfectly, and that initial message now says 166. Thanks for your help on all this - you da man!

Snapper - I wanted to synchronise bus clock and CPU for the reasons Dav said.
