CRT and lightening question
« on: June 08, 2004, 07:47:40 PM »
Our company has ATM's throughout the country and recently some storms in Texas destroyed a bunch of the CRT screens on the ATMs, yet didn't damage any other electronics in the ATM.

How is that possible? Anyone know what could cause  only the CRTS to be destroyed? I have seen ATMs power supplies go out from lightning, but on these....only the CRT was damaged.

Any ideas on this and possibly how to prevent this would be apreciated ..

Thanks

CRT and lightening question

Here is a thought,  I know that there is a magnetic field produced by a cathode ray tube.  In the old days, you were never to store your floppy disk near the monitor because of the magnets inside of the monitor.  When the lightning struck nearby, the electrical field produced by the lightning may have altered or destroyed the magnetic field of the CRT.
Just a random thought...
