As for before basic, Go buy 2 pair of the best running shoes you can find, your feet are your life in the army take care of them, Get your self a personal hygiene bag and enough of the stuff you like to last 2 or 3 weeks, dont take any personal items you dont want to lose, knifes especally as you will have to turn them in when you in process at the amnisty barrel,  .
And  HAVE FUN!  if you get in to it there is fun in every thing you do

Summer in South Carolina at Club Fed?  Ugh...

I did Lackland AFB (San Antonio, Texas) mid June-July in 1988.  Pffft...."dry heat" my arse...holy humidity.

I'd start a pretty advanced training program....get running and prepared for the workouts ahead of you.

Try and run a mile or so every other day until you go.  Its not nearly enough to prepare you for anything, but at least you wont get slack - you cant gain much in 12 days, but you sure as hell can lose alot.

If you drink or smoke, youre going to have to stop anyway so put yourself through "mini-detox" now.  Drink lots and lots of water every day - if there is yellow in your urine, drink more.

When you get down there, the only things that anyone can really tell you is 1.)  Keep your mouth shut.  2.)  Square yourself away quickly and encourage those around you to do the same.  3.)  Dont quit.  Youll be amazed at the punishment your body can take.  4.)  As hard as it seems when youre there, you will look back upon it fondly.  5.)  Dont worry... the rest of your service wont even remotely resemble basic.

Thank you for your service - good luck!

If you know anybody who has a floor buffer you might want to get some practice in ahead of time.

Remember every min. of it it will be some of your greatist memorys and you would redue it if you can (really, trust me on this)

I remember telling myself at the time to have someone kick my bellybutton if I ever looked back on it sentimentally in the years down the road :)

A great personal growth experience, but if they do it right you're going to be in for a running, exhausting shock. My main memories are continuous exhaustion and hunger, in no particular order :)

At least your real basic should be only 8 weeks with paralegal (unless things have changed) and then on to the AIT vacation -- be happy you're not in combat arms.

Paralegal also has built in perks, such as the fact if I'm deployed to Iraq I'll probably be assisting a lawyer who is an officer...

...in a combat zone, who you think they're gonna pick off first, the bars or the stripes? ;)
