Natural Metal effects for skinners.
« on: June 04, 2004, 05:43:45 PM »
Hey Guys,

I just thoght I would post some shots of the natural metal that I've been messing around with.
I saw the post about the reflective "chrome" p47. Due to some of the limitations about reflective properties of the models, I tried to "draw" reflective properties into some of the skins.

Anyway, I just wanted to post some examples of what I've done incase any one needs to skin some metal.

First up, metal extension plug on FW190-d9

Now the natural metal leading edges

Here's a p47d25 that I was working on - It looks ok here, but the properties of the d25 model make it look more grey and dull.
the exact opposite of trying to put camo on a reflective model.
I might change it up and give it a whirl as a p47d40.

Here is the base natural metal p47:

Lastly a couple p51s:
This one was "return to sender" by HTC. Reason was too blue. I thought that the color "depth" looked cool, but the more I looked at it the more it started looking odd to me also.

This is a toned down mustang. This was recently submitted. I can't say if there needs to be changes on this.

Anyway, Aluminum and metal on planes reflects at different colors depending on various circumstances.  Some of them will look bright white, others blue and purple fading into a white. This could be sun position, cloud cover and other envioronmental issues, as well as tons of "aluminum issues - polished, non polished, aged, ect....

The best way that I have found to do metal is to use lots of blues, greys and whites. Start with white/ add your gray for shading, then add your blues for tint, hue. But not too much blue :) And always follow the contour of the plane!

Hope this helps :)

My God, Waffle, those are AWESOME!

Have you posted them to http://www.ah-skins.com?

Do you use Photoshop?   Any chance you could post the PSD with layers intact as a template?    I don't see how they could be done any better!

You've got the right idea Waffle, just add scratches and scuff to it, so it looks like it's seen wartime.  Our planes aren't straight out of the factory.  ;)

hehe - I Wouldn't call it chrome, maybe just a little more "brilliant" in the reflectivity than the standard white/grey currently used for metal. Found it hard to distinguish stuff like invasion stripes or white markings  without a hint off color / shades

But pyro is right - there weren't any "chrome" planes flying. Most were over sprayed with an aluminum laquer, I believe. But the planes would have a reflective property to them that skins can "help" simulate. These being odd warps in panels, new panels which might've been more reflective or darker. Tons of variables in it.

Its just a matter of finding something that works and looks pleasing, while staying true to the time-frame / condition the aircraft were in.

Waffle, hopefully we'll be able in the future to allow skinners to control the specularity of materials.  Until then, stuff is going to inherently look off when you go from dull to natural or natural to dull.

I have been sticking closer to the grays and letting the model's material properties add the "shine."  IMHO the results are good.*

Hey Waffle, do you have a picture with the panel/rivet lines for the P47? Or would you be willing to email me one of your skins so I might copy the rivets form that?
