Engine startup
« on: June 06, 2001, 01:56:00 PM »
I got to thinking..and from looking at all my grandfather's planes when he starts em up..it seems the AH engine startup animations are..a bit slow? When he started the engine, the prop snapped around a few times, then when the engien caught, the prop wasn't seen again, like our AH idle. (you know what I mean)    ;) He then spent about 5 to 10 seconds watching the instraments get to green. Out AH engine seems to slowly spin up to idle speed. What do you think? Should the AH engine statup animation be faster?

I'm not sure if AH is right or not. The sounds I have installed are from real engines and they seem to match the prop graphics, but maybe they have been edited to be. So I'm not sure.
Go to Zeno's Drive In and watch the training films there. A good amount of the planes here in AH (US planes) have old B&W films trianing films on them.
I'm not sure what type of engines you're refering to that your Grandad is running but these 12 cylinder monsters tok a few moments to crank up.

Ok... not really knowing anything about this, I'll make a wild guess.

When your grandfather starts up the airplanes, they've already been warmed up... engine starts in AH are representative of the the first time starting an engine for the day.

Prob'ly wrong, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I watched a B-25 start cold, and it took a LONG time before it smoothed out.  When I show people the video of the thing missing and belching smoke, they say, "you flew in THAT???"

You bet I did.   :)

I'd like to see the AH planes belch some smoke when they start up.
