Kingfisher

Me and DRILL got to thinking about the catapults on the poop deck of the cruiser. They were originally used to launch the Kingfisher scout plane. I came up with an idea on how we could implament this and increase teamwork.

Each cruiser gets only 2 Kingfishers. You'd select one, and be stationed on the catapult. Start the engine, then ram the throttle forward. You'd be launched. Now, you'd fly the plane over an enemy field. Once there, you'd spot for the cruiser's main guns. But instead of correcting his fire, you'd click on a spot on the ground via looking out a window (i.e. you'd click on a hanger) if there is no one in the gun, then the gun would automatically fire to those coordinants if it is in range. If someone was in the turret, then a range and bearing would be shown in red above the range and bearing indicators. If the gunner destroys a target, then the Kingfisher pilot would get 1/2 the points the gunner does for destroying the targ. To land, simply land on water near the ship or on a airstrip. Now, the cruiser only has 2, so if both are in the air, no one could fly them, but if one is shot down, you could roll another.

Is this a good idea?

BTW, when are the PT smoke gens gonna work? <G>

I like the idea too... Adds to the whole "immersion" thing! It would need some refining to implement in a realistic and usable way.

I would think that landing on an airstrip would be disallowed. It'd be pretty tough on the float!

Sounds good to me. Anything to make those guns usefull would be nice.

How about something (a range indicator would be nice) for the shore batteries? I hate the way your view elevates with the damned barrel. The only way to shoot is to zoom in so you can see, and then the ships are below your view because you have to elevate the barrel so high.

That, coupled with the slow rate of fire and it is near impossible to hit the ships as the range and bearing is constantly changing.

It took me about 40 rounds to hit the CV 3 times. Then it went out of my field of fire  :(

Please allow us to keep our field of view level while elevating the barrel. After all, the ships are never up in the air, so why should I be forced to look up instead of at the ships?

Naval gunfire was never very accurate as you want it for AH, even in RL guys. This thing you are suggesting with clicking on targets from the scout plane wasnt even available in the Gulf War when the BB's sent over unmaned drones to observe their gunfire. If you dont beleive me go read somewhere about the % of actual hits vs shells fired when the Royal Navy finally caught Bismarck, even when Bismarck was stuck on a constant heading, speed and range. Big naval guns arent laser guided bomb throwers they are area bombardment weapons. That said I still dont think the AH model is adequate in terms of ship vs ship fire and maybe something better like a real rangefinder or radar should be looked into. But its fine for groundtargests especially with the recent changes and additions.

That's true Grun, but the Kingfisher was used in this way. They'd fly over targets, and call range and bearing on targets, like spotting arty. I'm not saying one click all gone, you'd still get misses from dispersion, but you'd be close....

i think if we put our ideas on how best to impament them we might get someting good going in our request i do think we need something to make it better to work with
thats why we put this up to get some feed back and see if it draws enough interest    :D

The Kingfisher is either in land mode with the floats off or sea mode with the floats on, she is not an amphib.  You sometimes see here on a dolly when on land but thats just for tow purposes.

here is a site with a couple photos, bottom couple show the dolly.  Top photo is at the Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola.
