Optimizing Graphics
« on: June 14, 2004, 06:22:10 PM »
I recently purchased a Dell XPS computer thinking that it would be able to handle the graphics a lot better.  I have come up with with a screen res set at 1280x1028 with a 75 constant frame rate...

Is there anyway to tweek the setting to get better performance?

Why would you need better performance?
Looks good to me.

Still getting flickering mountian peaks... some other land features are flickering also... maybe it's just bata...  Guy in my squad has a similar set up and gets 300 frame rates... I was wondering why such a big jump between the two..?

I get flickering textures and my vsync is on. His likely is too since he maxes at 75hz. Oddly enough, I found I can eliminate the texture flashing by turning on antialiasing.

Your monitor can only run at 75hz at the resolution you have chosen. Assuming you turn off the synch so you can get a better FPS rating you will not see any difference since your monitor is already maxed out.

I was also able to get rid of the flickering terrain by turning on the anti-aliasing (on a 9800 Pro).

Early version of beta I was pushing 100fps  I looked at the max refresh rate was 160 to 200 hz... right now I have my monitor set for 1152x864 at 100hz...

Okay where do I find this vsync and anti-aliasing at?  On the video driver?

*edit*

Okay I think I found it... what setting should I have it on...?

With a 9800XT I'd crank the aa all the way up. I was doing it with my 9800pro until aa kicked out with the new larger textures. Still working on that.

Based on what some have suggested, I tried setting my textures to 256, aa works. Now I have increased textures to 1024 and aa to 6x, still works and looks great!

Turn OFF application preference for both AA and AF.

Run both AA and AF at least on the x4 setting.

Well I turn on the AA to x4 and put Direct x at optimum performance.  At 1200x1600 I am getting frame rates from 116 to 68.  Funny thing is sitting in the tower, at the center of the map I was getting 107 t0 116 but at the outskirts bases I am getting 68... sound weird or what... I did this a couple of times just to see... and it happened everytime....

Yup, those are the kind of results you'll get with AA and AF enabled.  Have you noticed a 'crisper' picture with AA cranked?   No more jagged edges - but at a cost of a few frames per second.  I love it

Your system kicks bellybutton by the way
