Humans, pretty much instinctively draw away from exposing their sight to direct sunlight. We never realize the sun is so damn bright, because in reality we rarely, if ever, look at the general direction of the sun.
I'm sure it could be different among people, but for me, if I intendedly look in the general direction of the sun, not looking directly at it, it's still too bright and shiny that I immediately have to look somewhere else. The sun light is that intense.
I think the intensity is about right. There's just choice but to try not to fight looking at the sun <- hey! this is of tactical value already

Today, there was a big fight between A22 and A25(I think). The sun was rising on the horizon, the enemys were directly at east of our base. Ofcourse, that means that they came from the direction of the sun, with the sun on their backs. Having to fight with the sun in front of us was very disadvantageous, and I and my fellow pilots found ourselves struggling to position ourselves to put the sun on our backs.
It was a very interesting experience, and enlightening in regards to the tactical value of using the sun to one's disposal
