strat ???
« on: January 09, 2000, 10:30:00 AM »
Will there be any ?

The reason i am asking is that this beta has been out for some months now. I tried it yesterday and today for the first time since 033-034 and to be honest it is not much more than a WB "main arena" or BoB or FAII, but with fewer planes and better art.

I am not saying that this is a bad thing (or a good thing) for that matter although it IS a bit on the "traurig" side, but will we see anything more than this ? and when ? and what form ?

Looks like it's time to summarize the current strat model so we know what we talk about:

Field targets / result when destroyed:
  • Fuels: reduces the max allowed fuel load down to 25%
  • Ammo: reduces the bomb/rocket loadout down to zero
  • Barracks: reduces Troop loadout for C-47 down to zero
  • Tower: kills 12.5 mls radar radius around field
  • Acks: vulch / troop time
  • Hangar: does nothing
  • Runway: Landings count as ditches
  • Map room: can only be destroyed by 10 troops, field ownership changes

Strat targets / result when destroyed:
  • Fuel refineries: increase rebuild time of fuels on fields
  • Ammo factories: increase rebuild time of ammo on fields
  • Grunt training: increase rebuild time of barracks on fields
  • Radar factories: increase rebuild time of towers on fields
  • Flack factories: increase rebuild time of acks
  • City: Increases rebuild time of factories and HQ
  • HQ: Kills all radar for a country, 10,000lb needed

Default downtime for all field targets and HQ is 30 minutes, all factory and city targets is 60 minutes. This could change or have already been changed of course.

Azrael,
Excellent response!   Short..Accurate..and to the point!  Note: As Azrael has pointed out that to extend the effects for maximum damage. First hit City Targets (more down the bigger multiplier) Second hit Factories,Grunt Training,HQ & Refineries. Third Field Targets. Since To co ordinate all that requires a massive planned attact it is hard to do. So the moral is.. understand how you can inflict the appropriate pain with the numbers your side has at the time and execute. AGAIN!!! Hats of to Azrael for stating it so clearly!

Well, i honestly did not know about the existing strat model (where can i read about it?). However, as i said, i can't see the main difference from other sims (WB main etc)other than detailes.

I was wondering if there will be anything more than this, since this requires the same amount of planning as in WB main (for instance, were similar "strat" have existed for years).

We have an anarchaic arena where more or less randomly formed groups of squads acts together to "acomplish" something. For the most everything is happening inside the squad. This is nothing new.

Will there be different arenas? -with more "mission based" strat? - with AI controlled HQ ? - or human controlled HQ? - will there be any tools for the HQ to be used in planning? OR will all this be "reserved" for scenarios, SL etc. ???

I've mentioned a number of additional strategy ideas that has been accepted very well by the players. However, I haven't heard anything from the administration (HT, Pyro etc...) I don't think they are too interested in adding extra strategy at the moment?? It's unfortunate because additional strategy enhances the game dramatically at a global scale. While adding more planes etc.. may affect only a few pilots who fly them.

I am also a beleaver that there should be strat, but not a super detailed monstrosity.

Keep it somewhat simple.

But, I do think a few more do-dads would be nice.

I am a fan of the "trickle down" economics idea thats been batted around.  The home base produces all the supplies, then is carted to all the rest of the bases/cities by means of supply convoys (trucks, trains, cargo ships, ect).

However, one other idea that is known to be true sooner or latter are ground forces.  Tanks and trucks are slated to be included sooner or latter.  Player controlled ones.  This may lead to things like roads and bridges.

I just hope they are not trick ponys and will have a ligitimate and common OFFENSIVE use in the game.  As much as some people like flying aircraft I don't even play Aces High, even if it is free.  It doesn't offer alot I haven't seen before in Warbirds.

Hans.
