Russia warned U.S. of potential Iraqi attacks
Putin: Saddam's regime was planning terror attacks before Iraq warThe Associated Press
Updated: 8:03 a.m. ET June 18, 2004ASTANA, Kazakhstan - Russia gave the Bush administration intelligence before the Iraq war that suggested Saddam Hussein's regime was preparing attacks against the United States and its interests abroad, President Vladimir Putin said Friday.

Putin said he couldn't comment on how critical the Russians' information was in U.S. decision to invade Iraq. However, he said the intelligence didn't cause Russia to waver from its firm opposition to the war.

"Indeed, after Sept. 11, 2001, and before the start of the military operation in Iraq, the Russian special services ... received information that officials from Saddam's regime were preparing terrorist attacks in the United States and outside it against the U.S. military and other interests," Putin said.

"Despite that information about terrorist attacks being prepared by Saddam's regime, Russia's position on Iraq remains unchanged," Putin said.

Putin said Russia didn't have any information that Saddam's regime had actually been behind any terrorist acts.

No elaboration
Putin didn't elaborate on any details of the terror plots or say whether they were tied to the al-Qaida terror network.

He said the United States had thanked Russia for the information.

A commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States reported this week that while there were contacts between al-Qaida and Iraq, they did not appear to have produced "a collaborative relationship."

President Bush, however, insisted Thursday that Saddam had "numerous contacts" with al-Qaida and said Iraqi agents had met with the terror network's leader, Osama bin Laden, in Sudan.

Saddam "was a threat because he had terrorist connections -- not only al-Qaida connections, but other connections to terrorist organizations," Bush said.

Still trying to find reasons why to attack against Iraq?

Isn't that kinda late now ?

btw don't you think you should attack Cuba too? I'm quite sure uncle Fidel has made some plans against US.
Same goes with NK too and even with Russia. I bet there's still few nukes aimed to Washington DC and to other of your cities :)

We should attack Cuba just for the beachfront opportunities on Varadero Beach.  Melia shouldn't be allowed to hold that monopoly forever.

Give Cuba some time; It'll fold just like Russia after Castro is smelling bad six feet under and after that it will be one of the most popular places to spend your holiday.
Kinda like Estonia used to be for us Finns; with some money you could buy just about everything.

Actually the commision aknowledged ties between Iraq and Al Quida if you cared to read what was said. They did not say there was a link between 9/11, Iraq and Al Quida.

Vice Chairman of the 9/11 Commission Lee Hamilton blasted the mainstream press yesterday for distorting the Commission's findings on links between Iraq and al-Qaida, saying those findings actually support Bush administration contentions.

"The sharp differences that the press has drawn [between the White House and the Commission] are not that apparent to me," Hamilton told the Associated Press, a day after insisting that his probe uncovered "all kinds" of connections between Osama bin Laden's terror network and Iraq.

Story Continues Below

Hamilton's comments followed a deluge of mainstream reports falsely claiming that the 9/11 Commission had discredited the Bush administration's claim of longstanding links between Baghdad and bin Laden.
But the Indiana Democrat said the press accounts were flat-out wrong.

"There are all kinds of ties," he told PBS's "The News Hour" late Wednesday, in comments that establishment journalists have refused to report.

"There are all kinds of connections. And it may very well have been that Osama bin Laden or some of his lieutenants met at some time with Saddam Hussein's lieutenants."

Hamilton said that while his probe had failed to uncover any direct operational link between Baghdad and Osama bin Laden's terror network in attacks on the U.S., there's no question that "they had contacts."

OOOPS!  I guess you got your info from moveontocommunism.org, instead of actually reading the statement yourself.

Getting your own facts would probably help keep you from looking so foolish.
