Audigy Soundcards and Via Chipsets
« on: June 20, 2004, 12:25:56 AM »
I purchased an Audigy2ZS soundcard.  I had installed in my PC the SB Live 5.1 Card....and have Klipsch 5.1 Speakers.

Uninstalled the 5.1.....installled the Audigy2 ZS.....loaded the drivers....and had the worst time I've ever had with a soundcard
in my many years of using and building PCs.

Sound worked...but got noise from center channel...speaker setup was 5.1....but the directions the sound came from were to say the least hit and miss.  Sometimes I'd get sound from rear left..sometimes not.  Used the speaker test option...and not once did the configuration test properly.  Sometimes I got rear left and rear right from the same speaker.  And had a constant noise coming from center channel but no sound.  After making sure for the nth time plugs were in the right holes....speaker configuration was correct.  when I did get sound it was "hissy".  Tried vox when I logged onto Aces High and during radio check all that heard me was the constant hiss, and garble that I heard now coming from a 4 speaker setup.

Folks...I've heard that Audigy doesn't work or has problems with Via Chipsets.  I've also heard that the Audigy2 had corrected those problems.  Guess what...it hasn't.

In short...if you're running Via Chipsets...KT333 here with the latest Hyperion Drivers.  Forget anything with the name Audigy on the Box....it won't work properly...or maybe not at all.

Uninstalled the Audigy2ZS...reinstalled the SBLive 5.1 and all is well again.  Creative...take that Audigy and...(fill in blanks)

System
ASUS A7V333 MOBO
Via KT333 chipsets (Hyperion 4.51 Driver)
AthlonXP2400 ~2 gig
1024 PC2700 DDR
Win2KPro OS
Radeon 9800Pro 128mb Vid Card

I had one hell of a time getting my Audigy to work as well. Took me a day messing around with it to get my vox to work properly. I figured out that the control panel that comes with it selected a very unusual option after I had previously changed it. I finally got very ticked and set the option correctly and deleted the control panel. Never had a problem since. I'm not sure exactly what I did, and it was suck a pain in the ars that I don't ever wana go back and try it out. But do try and fiddle with the control panel. Thats my best guess. Either that or you have an on board sound chipset and the 2 cards are conflicting. GL with it.

Hmmm,..Hajo, I know it might be a silly question, but did you install the stuff from the Creative CD's?  Or did you just install the driver from the WEB site?
Here is a trick most people miss.  The WEB drivers Creative has are updates and check for the installation of a previous driver from CD.  However, you do not have to install the CD drivers.  If you put the CD into the drive you installed Windows XP from, the WEB drivers will look there for them and then install.
This makes for a very pristeen installation.

Also note if there were any remnants of the SBLive driver laying about, it can cause problems.

As a side note, the Audigy 2 ZS I have, made a remarkable improvement in everything I run.  All games got better frame rates and ran smoother than they ever did with the SBLive card.
I don't use VIA based motherboards, as a side note, so your mileage may vary.

Gents.....thnks for the responses.

Now that I've got the SB Live 5.1 in and working great....I don't wish to waste another three to four hours trying to get the AudigyZS working properly.  In my opinion I doubt it will.

Pipz talked to creative tech help on the phone and they stated to him that they do have issues with the Via chipsets.

What really pos' me is that hardware manufacturers know their are issues beforehand.  Why didn't they just say on the Box the Audigy2ZS came in that " Has known issues with Via Chipsets, in may not install properly or work on Via Chipset Mobos."

I wouldn't have wasted my time installing, and returning the Sound Card.  Let alone purchasing it.

what skuzzy said,

I've had the audigy (1) card for a couple years (with via).  in the beginning, I had lots of problems with it (random inputs, static,or random volume changes in games mostly),  a friend of mine, helped me out using the same loading method(after he spent a while helping me make sure all of the 5.1 drivers where gone.

it's been working great ever since.
