beating the reversal??

I've veiwed the ilms on how to perform the reversal. so how do you win against someone who performs a reversal on you???

beat him to the punch/turn/angles


sort of like the old addage "early bird gets the worm" to a point anyway.

sometimes you can be "way" to early on your  reversal/turn etc.........and it will come back to haunt you.

Easy... you set the guy up.  

First pass or two you do a really lazy bore n zoom "I'm a sissy" type pass.  

Next pass you set up the same way, then you chop throttle and use rudder and whatever else to slow down and stay behind the guy as he evades the next sissy bore n zoom pass.  

Then you hope you kill him before you fly past him.  

It'll work about 80% of the time, depending on what you fly and how good a shot you are.

I would do it on the first pass. There's only one WT but plenty trying that reversal. Get up close and personal and make them prove their skill. No gimme's, make em work for it. The better shot you are, the less they'll be able to prove. Any move the depends  on the guy behind flying badly is suspect. He gets slow, you get slow, but you're on his 6 - I'd say you have the advantage. If you cant get slow because of whats arround, why even bother with the guy? I would because I'm attracted to a low plane like a moth to a blue flame :D

Ditto what Urchin said.  Thats a little too risky if you'll need the E you'll blow to deal with any other potential threats in the area.  If you're all alone, sure go for it :)

My solution to not getting reversed is - dont get yourself in that situation in the ifrst place :)  If you know you're going to overshoot, trade some alt for speed.  Always think of altitude as a bank for energy.  This does depend on the type of aircraft involved or if you know specifically the E states of both aircraft involved.  

There are two situations you'll want to look out for:

1)  Relatively high speed pass:  If you cant land a few hits, don't bleed your E unless you know you can disable them.  If you miss, conserve your E (no wild maneuvers) and set yourself up for another run.  Take the time to see where and what the other guy is doing.  Depending his current velocity, a small window for a lethal shot at you exists.  Good clean reversals require excellent timing, and, if done correctly, you'll be dead before you know it.  So, keep an eye out for him and orient your aircraft such that his window will be very difficult to attain.  ie, instead of climbing predictably at a 45, bank a tad and keep your tail pointed away from him.  Be unpredictable, but not erratic.  You'll need that E for another pass.

2)  Scissors:  If you find yourself in a scissors, you don't always have to throttle back; do that as a last resort.  Always stay on top in a scissors unless you can squeeze in a tight snapshot or firing solution.   If you always turn on top of him, your E will decrease, and he will eventually slide out infront of you.    Even if you find yourself nearly vertical and on the edge of stall, dont worry.  If the fight began with relatively equal E states (or if you have a mad accelerator such as the G10), and you stayed on TOP, he will stall out before you.  Simply find him on the way down and you're behind him.  If timed correctly, you can find yourself in a perfect firing solution.  

One thing is absolute:  You must keep your eye on his movements.  Lose sight, lose the fight.

How I beat "the reversal":

Firstly anticipate that its gonna happen. Don't assume the other guy's a schmuk as its just as likely he's a vet and will catch you on the first pass with "the reversal" which he's honed to a fine edge.

The other night I had a perfect example of what to do. I'm in a P-51D with another friendly nearby and happen across a lower N1K2 over the water off some such base under attack. We take passes at the N1 and I see on my first pass that this guy knows what he's doing as he does "the reversal". OK I know to give this guy a little more respect than usual.

My first pass I see him roll right as I'm lining up my shot. He starts back left before I'm by him. I know what he's doing so I turn *away* and break upwards into a chandelle. What I'm doing here is spiralling to throw off  his guns solution, using my superior speed to get out of effective guns range as soon as I can, zooming up to set up another pass. If the guy's a noob he may try and follow me up in which case he's just become a rope victim. This guy didn't. He knew what he was doin.

The other guy makes a pass. I tell him on range to watch out that he's gonna reverse on him as he passed. He says "roger that", makes a pass, turns into the N1 and becomes close range cannon fodder as he overshot. Blammo! Hey, it ain't like I didn't see that comin!:D

I take a few more passes on the N1. Each is like the last. I might have gotten a few hits here or there but nothing major. This is taking a while. Another friendly comes in and makes a pass. I warn him too. Same result. The N1 revs as he passes and blasts him to kingdom come. Another textbook reversal.

I take another pass with no hits but this time I make the mistake of losing sight of the N1 and inadvertantly turn into him as he'd rolled thru. I still have speed which is what saved me from losing more than my rudder. He withdraws toward his base. I'm more careful now as I have damage and seek easier quarry.

Ends in a stalemate from my end but the cagey vet ended up with at least two scalps that I saw that run before falling to something or other as I got a 'sist. That cagey vet was none other than Urchin. bro. Was a great fight.:aok

Anyway, the short of it is to engage with speed and break upwards and away. Breaking away makes the NME take the long way around to get guns on you and theoretically your speed should put you out of guns range. If you break into him as you pass you save him both time and distance giving him a good snap shot oppurtunity which is what the first two victims did here.
