Vancouver Fire Department
« on: June 26, 2004, 11:16:26 AM »
I just got off the phone with my wife who is in Vancouver with all the kids (for 3 weeks!).  They are staying with my wife's sister who lives there.

One house on the street called 911 after someone in the house had fallen down some stairs.  Everything was fine and the ambulence took the "victim" to the hospital to get checked out, but they were not seriously hurt at all.

The fire service though was the first on the scene in a big fire engine.  As they really didn't have to do much they decided to entertain the children who had gathered to see what was going on.

Both of my boys were shown around the fire truck, allowed to sit in the front and were even allowed to put on the siren.  Each child was then presented with a hat with the station logo on it etc.

My oldest now wants to be a fireman...and a police man....and a doctor (his original wish from quite some time ago).

I really wish I could thank those guys (and possibly girls, I don't know).  It was all the kids could talk about on the phone.

REALLY cool of them to take the time to give the kids a great experience.

I also work for the Fire Dept. and when time and events permitt we ALWAYS give kids and young adults tours of the station and equipment. It is a Fire Dept. tradition. (Also a little sneaky as if you hook them young they may be possible recruits in the future. ;)  )

Volunteer Fire Dept.'s are ALWAYS short of funds. Donate to them. Yours sounds like a big city FD - If you want to really thank them, go and donate to their benevelent fund or a charity they support. Also send them a letter thanking them or the next one you see just give them a simple "Thank You" - it will make their day.  :aok

Jester, I have already sent an e-mailed "Thank You" and when I said earlier that I wouldn't forget their kindness...I meant it.  I will be donating to them also.

Thank you for what you do too man.  :aok

Our FD is all volunteer and all poor lol. We just serve 550 people in town and have auto response for another close town of 500 people.  Our brush truck is pretty much an antique, think its a '53 jeep actually. soon as I get ftp working ill upload a pic of it

BLUE LIGHTS ON A FIRE TRUCK!  GOT to be a bunch of Yankee's.   Next think they will be wanting is Gay Marrage!

Don't know Meat, looks like a cool old ride. Bet it is a PAIN in the prettythang finding parts for though. Looks well taken care of, a good washing will do wonders.  :D If you ever want to sell that siren drop me an E-Mail!

Our Brush Truck is a 1977 Dodge 4x4 pick-up with a 500 gal tank and 5 HP pony pump. As we don't have very many hills it will go about anywhere. Built like a tank but cold natured as HELL!

You mentioned your rig was a 1953 model. Our secondary pumper is a 1953 Ford/LaFrance and it starts better than my own personal truck! Just tap the starter and it fires right over and is ready to go! Rides like a lumber wagon and will only do 55 mph but is as dependable as the Rock of Ages.

Your coverage area is almost identical to ours - even the inside of your Fire House looks like ours! LOL!

Really sad thing is that those extinguishers are 10 years old and I bet they dont even work anymore.  On back is a small gasolene powered water pump, maybe 5 to 6 HP. Tank is maybe 250 gallons i think. That old siren is rare and I dont think were giving that thing up (shoot I know how much their worth lol.)  We have a '52 or 53 GMC pumper in storage, really dont know if it still runs. One of the guys that drove it claimes it will run 70 mph on a flat highway.

Our tanker is a converted deuce and a half truck, talk about MONSTER. Stand in the front of it and you look like your 2 feet tall lol. I will have to get some more pics taken the next time their all outside.  Thankfully to the Illinois Grant program, we now have a 2004 pumper/tanker due to arrive in Oct. That will replace our old '69 LaFrance. That still is a nice truck but its gonna get stripped down before we get rid of it. Back half of that truck has a 750/1000 gall tank plus a massive generator.  Think I have a few more pics, have to look.

Cyrval,

If you want to thank the brothers and sisters in Vancouver so everyone in the service can see it. Go to http://www.iaff.org and submit a letter for them to print in the International Firefighter magazine.

I want to personally thank you for recognizing the effort put out by the people on that engine company for taking the time to entertain the kids. We carry even carry little teddy bears to give away to kids on our scenes.

Oh and as Slash stated cookies are great, so are pies, cakes, brownies or any other treat that is both high in fat and calories. :D

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Thankfully to the Illinois Grant program, we now have a 2004 pumper/tanker due to arrive in Oct.

Great to hear. Post some pics and specs when she comes in. The deuce and a half brings back memories of my early days here with the local vol. dept. We had a '52 model with an 1100 gal. tank we used as a brush rig. It was scary as hell getting to the fire but she fight all day once we got there.

This site has pics of our stuff.

http://www.nrhffa.org/index.htm

Im at Station 4 c-shift. I try to spend as much time on T-224 (Miss Daisy) as possible. If Im not on her Im on M-224. There is no pic of our eng. for reason. Check out E-222, they are the same.

There is a pic or 2 of me some where on there. ( eating cupcakes probably)

Oh and as Slash stated cookies are great, so are pies, cakes, brownies or any other treat that is both high in fat and calories

Dont forget the ice cream:D:D
