Unbalanced Terrain!
« on: January 01, 2001, 10:25:00 AM »
It sure would be nice to see a balanced terrain in the MA.
The current terrain is unbalanced.  P21 and P42 are ridiculously close to each other, forcing those 2 teams with ownership to be in a constant fight to keep their ports, while the northern team is free to take their time.
The northern team will rarely lose a port.(not seen it yet personally)  While the southern teams fight over p21 and p42 the northern team is free to attack p14 or p32 pulling resources away from the fight down south.  If the north makes an effort, the southern team they attack is guaranteed to lose a port, either the southern port they were trying to defend or the northern port due to not having the resources to defend both adequately.
Strategic targets of the southern teams are also, in some cases ridiculously easily accessible, (city near A19).  It may not be the most attractive map to look at but a symmetrical, yet fair map cannot be hard to design.
The new terrain is pretty, with some obvious shortfalls, that i'm sure will be addressed soon.  Hope some of you terrain designers are learning by this map's example.

i think a very asemtrical map can be fair, it will look different yes, but when its all added up they are equal, thats what the MA needs to be, not this Pie chart looking abomination

Wobble, I've been flying syms for sometime now, It's really hard to hit that "sweet spot" in a perfect placement of feilds. Alot of thought has to be put into the placement, taking into consideration how each and every possible feild capture will change the map. I designed my PAcmap before 1.05 came out, but had an idea how it would work, so i did this...

I also made the 3 mainlands with the center feild ( no real other way to design this with 3 sides) BUT as you or the enemy goes deeper into the enemy land the feilds become tougher to take ( I.E. enemy feilds are much higher in Alt, more spread out, mountains on 3 sides.ETC. ) and i put in canyons, so a Vfeilds on the mainland cannot Take another mainland feild ( close enough to help, but not "TAKE"). there are still smaller islands with JUST vfeilds and small airfeilds for those that want ground fights and stepping " stones" to the Mainland ( the heart of the enemy).

If you seen my PACmap, the main coastline of the 3 main fields are at least 6k high with random 88's . No ship attack is possible (without spotters). I didn't put any Large island feilds close to the mainlands. So you'll need to really organize BEFORE you attack a mainland ( heres where teamwork and squads will flourish).  I also put the Shipyards IMO a very hard to hit spot.

In the MA now , once an enemy is rolled over, theres no way to stop it, and HQ is no better defended or stratigically advantanged than a forward feild (IMO). This, I think I have changed. I also made a sweet, huge volcano in the center island that is really fun to fight in ( if anyone played my map) I tried to make the center "fun" to draw the 3 sides in ONE spot to fight ( rarely seen in AH).

Now, before anyone wants to slam me if i come across i don't think HTC knows how to  design a map, I am in NO way, in ANY way stating this!! In fact, i admire HTC crew,  I AM stating WHAT I see and having dabbled with the Editor, what i would like to see in a map, having the 6 odd years of experience flying Syms. And for those that say "don't like it?.. design your own".... Well i did

I forgot to add this...

I also feel "perk planes" will only hurt this Sym if not implimented right. Let me explain, Alot of playes complain when it's their turn "In the barrel" well how would you like to be outnumbered 3 to 1 and the enemy has "perk planes" to boot?  That will be even worse IMO, and some will say well "They" will have perk planes also. Yes, they would, but being the ones " in the barrel" they probably would have fewer and be reluctant to fly them for fear of "losing their "perk plane". The handing out of perk planes IMO should be handed out as the numbers of a team decline, example: let's say theres 20 bishops, 69 rooks, and 53 knights, the perk planes should be given to the Bishop's on a scale according to the Numbers of each team. Now some MAY switch to the smaller side to fly their "perk plane" and thus evening out the numbers. BUT we will still have the few that will say "i earned my perk plane and i pay my subscription fee I am entitled to fly any damn country i want WITH my perk plane.  and Yes you should , but NOT at a time when gameplay is soooooo unbalanced.. again this is just My Point of veiw, and only a suggestion.
