Question to DVD burners...
« on: July 01, 2004, 08:55:16 AM »
I'm a complete n00b regarding this.

What is (are) the advantage(s) of the DVD-R/RW over the DVD+R/RW?

What is the best support for backups? DVD-RW?

Thanks.

It's actually a brand war. Pioneer vs. Sony, among others in each side. DVD+R was the first, and supposedly more players were supporting that standard, but nowadays most play both.

With Double Layer DVDs you'll have the same thing. DVD+R DL are already in the market, but DVD-R DL will soon follow.

For backups... well, it depends. You can wait until Double Layer media prices go down (give it a couple of months) or even try Iomega REV, a drive that reads detachable hard disk drives with a capacity of 35 GB each (approx $50 each cartridge).

I have one and I am very happy with it.

My suggestion? Wait for the Double Layer media to go down.

My understanding is that DVD-R are for Recording to disc but it cannot be changed. The information put on the disc cannot be overwritten but only read.

DVD-RW is a disc type that is Re- Writable. The information on the disc can be written over at a later time with new information.

If the information you need to back up is very important I would use the R discs. If the information is just routine back up I would use the RW discs and rotate them on a weekly basis.
