unable to update driver NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 400 (Gateway)
« on: July 02, 2004, 07:26:34 PM »
Help, please.

I downloaded beta version of AH2 week prior to change over. Got message that Zbiased buffering not supported. AH2 will run , but video horrible- can't see through the gunsight etc. I downloaded new driver Nvidia 56.72 . When I installed this and tried to reboot, it gave me a blue screen  with stop error 0x0000007E (0xC0000005,0xF7E3A444,0xF8948E20, 0xF8948B20).  I tried again with removing old driver first , but same thing happened. I believe the old driver was reinstalling itself. I tried to remove the old driver and turn off the restore feature and use driver cleaner software, but no luck. I tried 2 earlier drivers from nvidia site as well (43.45 and 30.something). I seemed to be able to get windows to boot with these (music comes on), but screen goes black like it is in rest mode and the power light on the monitor dims. I restarted in safe mode and my monitor is not listed anywhere in my system >hardware> device manager files. It is like the monitor disappeared. Also, I end up having to install the new drivers over the old drivers, because everytime I  reboot the 2001 driver that came with my computer gets loaded. The old driver seems to be reinstalling itself directly from the video card when the card is detected on Plug and Play. I even tried disabling Plug and Play, but then my device manager is blank and I can't get access to anything. I can't seem to get rid of the old drivers without them getting reinstalled everytime the card gets recognized by windows.  I am starting to think that the NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 400 (Gateway) is modified by Gateway so that you can only get a driver upgrade from their pathetically out of date (2001) website. I did get suggestion from Skuzzy to reinstall windows, but have found several posts on multiple bulletin boards regarding my exact problem with Gateway computer and configs and no luck with reinstalling windows.
Anyone out there with any suggestions?
If no suggestions, any recommendation for new video card ?

My specs are as below,

Thanks,
