Fix Problem with Athlon Hanging AGP Programs (Windows 2000/XP) Popular
Windows may stop responding when you use an Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) program with an AMD Athlon processor. This is due to the memory allocated by the video adapter driver becoming corrupted.

Yup I remeber that. I believe it only affected the early Athlons and motherboards way back in 2001/2002.

Don't think it effects the current batch of CPU's and motherboards as I haven't seen that problem with my Athlon64 and never saw it with my Thunderbird CPU.

Thinking about it, it only affected early Athlons / mobos when the change from 2x to 4x AGP happened.

I just basically post this stuff for people with old gear, who like me are trying to play the game on older gear.

You may have newbie gamers wonder into AH who never noticed a problem until trying to game, there are many other instances when this may apply to those with the older stuff.

My question is, why post tweaks only for current gear?, It's usually the older stuff, or people who can't afford to upgrade to new stuff, that need the tweaking help.

Most of the new stuff won't need to much tweaking for another year or so, depending on various updates, whether it be DX or a game.

The more DX updates the less older vid cards will function properly, it's what past experiences have told me, along with some other techie types. Some of the older cards don't understand what new DX version is demanding from it, and maybe vise versa.

If the tweak doesn't apply then it doesn't apply, but it's good to make the option availble and known in case it can help someone who doesn't have new gear.

I'll tell you what, I'm going to get this PIII 450 to play AH2, in fact it already does 25 on the runway, and I don't think I've totally popped the cork on this system yet. If I can get another 15 fps on the runway I'm going to give it a shot, it will prolly suck for my taste, but WTF!? until I can afford to upgrade. I'll just have to avoid furballs, which is just fine with me.

It's not over clocked so I still have that option open with 25 FPS to start with, I can clock it to a 500. That should give me another 5-8 FPS

I haven't even touched my Video card drivers yet so that option is still there, it's not OCed either. I can still Volt-mod my Geforce MX 420 64mb, that should get me 5-15 FPS

Clearing all resouce hogs might get me another 3-5 FPS, a desktop where nothing runs but windows and the game

Fast Write might give me another 3-5 FPS

So with an extra 10-25 FPS would give me 40-50 total on the runway. As long as I don't step below  say 22-24 fps I am having SOME fun.

This is before adjusting any distance settings in AH 2. If the fog was thicker it would help me even more.

I did this in AW3, I made a machine do something it should not have, in theory, been able to do. I flew AW3 with a 50-60 FPS, low point was 17. on a AMD 350, Diamond Viper 330 4MB. It took some research to get there but in some cases it can be done and was.

Hope is not lost for people with CPUs over 450, just don't expect it to do it, but if I can do it, anything faster then my 450\500 can have hope, just don't expect it to always flow like melted butter. ;-)

An honourable intention FT animal i.e. trying to help those with older gear. However it is important to point out for which gear the information refers too e.g. a simple read of this post might suggest to someone that AMD cpus has problems with AGP. This has not been the case for such a long time.

All I am saying is that it is a bit misleading.

Cheers

I understand Animal, my post wasn't intended as a critcism, just as extra info. I used to have one of those combinations, early Athlon in a AMD 750 chipset mobo. Had the problems described. Was only pointing out was long time ago.

Ya I'll buy that, misleading, not intensionally. But I can now see where it was misleading because of the AH "jitter" reports etc..
