win2k or xp pro for AH2
« on: July 08, 2004, 06:53:19 AM »
Does AH2 prefer one over the other?

Im gonna build an AH2 puter after my next  vacation and i have a licence for both.

Im about to do my annual reinstall of the Thinkpad that now has XP pro on it, and i would prefer to reinstall the thinkpad with XP pro and use the win2k licence on the AH2 puter.

The puter im gonna build for AH2 (mostly) will have athlon64 and ATI card of some sort if that makes any diff.

thx

Definitely XP, Win2K isn't really 'gamer friendly'...

For gaming, I'll recommend:

1. Win XP Home/Pro (best all-round solution)

2. Win 98 SE (light on used resources, but you'll have to tweak it to use the RAM instead of creating huge swap files...)

3. Win 2K

I would give WinME a wide berth...

XP is my prefered choise for my laptop for several reasons but i guess ill have to give that up. Ive decided to never again buy windows so getting a new XP is not gonna happen.

You can activate XP on 2 machines but you won't be able to reactivate for 6 monthes if you have to format and reload either one.

one would wonder......  but when you've got that much money, everything is legal.

Was reinstalling bro-inlaws Dell box with XP last week .... just went through similar headaches

and don't get me started on cd-keys ....

win2k was working good for me on ah2 .. haven't tried it on XP tho, I don't have it myself

If oyur getting an Athlon 64, try a dual boot.
Get your free beta (rock solid) Windows XP64 from Microsoft and dual boot it with other OS, I use XP64 and Win2k.
Under XP 64 although you take a slight fps hit (less mature drivers) its seems smoother, maybe the 64bit transfers?
