Isnt that a water cooling jacket around the barrel? My first thought was a small caliber aa machine gun, targeting at maximum elevation.

Also since in N Africa, doubt shooting ropes up....

They look Italian.

Looks like a water cooled machine gun.

My guess is Breda machine gun, water cooled in antiaircraft mode.
