What stinks about War in the Pacific
« on: July 10, 2004, 08:43:28 AM »
I'm sorry. I'm not a cheap person by any stretch of the imagination!

I mean, I spent $20.00 in postage mailing magazines out to guys on this board because I wanted to.

So I wanted to try War in the Pacific.

I called matrix and asked if there was a demo...

Nope....

I asked if there were any retailers that sold it....

Nope...

I asked what their return policy was.....

Final sale...

So let me get this straight...You want me to spend $70.00 for a DOWNLOAD and a PDF (not even a real instruction manual and CD) and if it totally sucks...and I mean, sick of it in 7 days, I can't get s refund!

Pffft.....bad business practices guys...

anyone know of a demo I can try?

1 turn is equal to 1 day, 365 days a year, 4 year war, 20 mins per turn - 486 hours to finish the game.

Play say 2 hours EVERY day is 243 days......I'm hoping to finish the game I just started in 2007......

What would they put in the demo when an actual battle takes two months of game play to prepare for?

Muck, I already tried to tell you that WITP is probably not the right game for you, since you admitted that you're more of a casual strategy gamer.

That being said, if you're willing to invest the time to print out the manual and study it, and learn the fine intricasies of the game....then I guarantee you that you'll think $70 was too little money for the game.

Everyone I knew who tried their first game, Uncommon Valor, got hooked, and hooked hard. It is an addicting game, and I suspect WITP will be more of the same.

I suspect that the reason Matrix Games decided on no demo and no money back guarantee, is because they are making a game for a niche market who already knows they will enjoy the product.

UV/WitP are not games....they are a way of life. :)

Try Pacwar by Grigsby - it's a free download and the fore runner of the current game.

Play for a week then let me know if you'd like to try vs a human opponent - historical start, 1 turn per day, historical resources, I'll take JP.

Go to the downloads secion of Matrix games, look at the bottom left of the download screen it's there.

It's slightly easier than the new one as a lot of the supply and transport stuff is automated but the basics are pretty much the same. New one has more eye candy as well.

nope shouldn't be a problem, the one turn a day thing takes care of that, it doesn't matter when you make the turn as long as you do it every day - once you get into it though one normally wants to make more than one turn a day which is fine - but 1 a day is the minimum.

First turn takes a few hours as you have to check every task force and turn off the computer controlled bases and HQ's which takes forever - print out the map and the key strokes makes it easier.

The US player should try to defend Pearl, Midway, Australia and Columbo till 1943 when he gets the serious reinforcements - Jp has to win before end '42 or be in a very, very strong position - say having taken Pearl by then or he's lost.

It's a good game vs ai even though it's 10 yrs old - against a human opponent it's awesome - very sweaty palms stuff!!

If you get as far as playing for two weeks my bet is you buy the new Pacwar it's a LOT more complicated!
