Im confused about monitors.
Are crt's still the best for gaming?
Or the new flat monitors? These still seem overpriced. And I read conflicting reviews about the quality of the picture when used for gaming.
What do you recommend?

A Good 19" or 21" CRT is still the best bet for gaming Lew.

While LCD's have gotten a little better for graphics & gaming, they just don't have the refresh that a CRT provides.

Note: I'm sure some guy is going to jump on here and tell ya he uses a 17" LCD he got from Newegg or something and that it works perfect:rolleyes:  He also has probably never used a good 19" or 21" CRT for high end gaming or graphics.{perfect flat of course}

Check this thread

LCDs for gaming do exist and are much more comfortable to look at than CRTs. You need to choose carefully tho.

I am more than uber-happy with my Acer 1711b monitor (and it is cheap too!).

I agree that graphics are crisper n brighter on CRT than MOST LCDs.  I used a perfect flat Mitsu 22" CRT (which I still use in Guam)  before I got my bigscreen LCD but I will never go back.  The refresh rate is certainly not a problem with it, possibly because it is a rear projection LCD.  I don't see any ghosting/blurring even with 2 jet fighters in LOMAC merging at Mach 1 and the graphics are awesome.  I have also played on my Samsung SM172N LCD and there is only the slightest momentary blurring mostly as views switch and happens so fast it isn't a problem.  All that said, a good flat CRT is still the best gaming bang for the buck but I love playing AH from 10' away in my recliner.

I will agree that a CRT has better color than most LCD monitors but I switched to an LCD from what used to be a good 19" CRT flat screen monitor (before it died) and haven't thought twice about it...except when I took back the Samsung 172N (25ms response) 17" LCD because of ghost/blur in all the games and I used it for two weeks before doing that. I now have an NEC/Mitsubishi 1712 LCD 17" monitor that pushes the 16ms response time and its colors are slightly off in some things. But its much easier on my eyes than the CRT was. I also don't have any ghost/blur in games of any type now.

I had a Samsung Syncmaster 19" CRT with the "Dynaflat" display in it and was crystal clear and fast for everything I needed. Then one day it went into the crapper and of course without the original packaging I got stuck with a useless paper weight. The same thing happened with my original 19" Dell flat screen CRT.

If you have room for a CRT 19 - 22" Totally flat monitors are very good value. Make sure you get a Diamondtron or Trinitron.

If you want a TFT the important figure is the response time for gaming. 16 is ok 12 is better. These come at a price. Cheaper TFTs typically are 25 nms. These are crap for gaming, but fine for office work.

Geez guys read the thread I am pointing to. Response time figures can be terribly deceiving.

My screen is 25ms....no blurring (at least no blurring that my eyes can perceive) at all!

You are right and I did read the thread before I posted. However it has been my observations on a few different LCD screens that the lower the response times the less ghost/blur that occurs with it. At least that is what happened with my 25ms LCD before I changed over to the current one.

I have a HP P1130 (their pro model)  21inch and it's a fantastic monitor, we have alot of 19's and 21's at work both CRT's and LCD's and the image on my HP is far better. Especially for games.

21inch CRT is great bang for the buck these days. LCD's suffer blurring though are getting better.
