GV zoom = gear down?

I swear that while sitting in a gv or a field gun and zoomed in all the way, fighters seem to have their gears down as they get closer and then the gear pops up as they close to say about <1000.

I have seen this as well have even seen it a plane but not as often as i do while in a vehicle.
