Girl dies after dog mauling; animal destroyed after deadly attack
A toddler died Thursday afternoon from wounds she sustained when a dog mauled her at the home of family friends.
Patricia J. "Morgan" Anderson, 2, died at South Georgia Medical Center, said Sgt. Terry Arnold, chief investigator with the Cook County Sheriff's Department deputy.
She had been transferred from Adel Memorial Hospital following the dog attack, which occurred at about 10 a.m.
"(Coroner) Ron Lipsey called us (between 1-2 p.m.) and said he had gotten word that the child had died," Arnold said.
Anderson and her mother were living with friends in the Chaserville area in north Cook County. The friends had a dog, which deputies described as a bulldog mix, tied behind the residence.
Anderson stepped outside the back door of the house and came in contact with the dog.
Investigator Brent Exum said an Hispanic worker nearby, hearing the child's screams, rushed to assist her. The worker wasn't mauled, but the dog bit the homeowner.
"The dog was taken by animal control from the City of Adel," Exum said. "The dog was euthanized following the proper procedures."
Health officials also conducted rabies tests on the dog.
The investigators said no charges have been filed.
The case remains under investigation.
