Wow!  Thanks for all the info about this plane.  Wish we had an F4U here at the air musem locally!      I envy guys like Jigster that get to see em up close all the time    

Oh well I'll be you don't have a real live gooney bird at your museum!      he he he  Look!!  He's landed at a Bishop VH!  Drop the drunks!!!!

This airplane is an F4U-5.  Notice the side cheek scoops on the engine cowl.

 If that's the same one i've seen at the air show in Houston it's an F4u-5n or at least that's what it says on the bottom of the tail just under the H-stab.

cowling flaps, they open up for better cooling when down low, or running on the ground.

Yeah, without guys like Jig, these planes would never be washed and the airlines porta-poties would never be emptied  

Actually, Jig has a tendency to impress all of us in 33rd with his aviation history knowledge.  He knows more about most planes than guys 3-4 times his age who served in the air force (army air corps...no joking here)  

I am continually amazed how he is able to recite plane stats from the top of his head.

Yeah well I pay for it. That's a 40 mile trip every few weekends. But at least they let me in the museum free now.

Sounds horrible though. Thing sounds like a car engine it's so smooth.

F4F has a much healther pop-clank-BAM sound to it. Most inlines aren't even as quiet as that F4U.
