setting up this system?

was running an athlon 1ghz processor in an asus (forget exact model, but can find is needed). with 768mb PC133 memory
system was abotu 3 years old.
one day ZAP it shuts off while playing AH. i think WTF, and touch the case. almost burned my fingers.
bit of investigation, the power supply fan had gotten gunked up with dust / smoke residue and shut off. PWS overheated obviously and carpped out.
when i went to replace what i was sure the MB / processor i have the service tech and a local, but not totally trusted computer store test the 1ghz processor.
he said it POST'd fine, and "should" work fine.
i still have the board, with the processor still installed, and the memory, and a spare case. i "could" set it up with a new power supply theoritically and run a linux box, or a win98 box to do email / dumb stuff on.
money is real tight, and the only expense i'd know if is a power supply, and a cheap KVM switch to get this running, but that is a stretch for me, and dont want to do it unless it is a solid investment.
whats your thoughts??
