Does this make sense?
« on: July 27, 2004, 09:54:06 AM »
OK, I recently upgraded my processor and graphics card. That's it. Nothing else. Well, now it takes about 30 seconds to join the MA and I get the 'cannot recieve updates, switching to TCP' message.

1. What does that error mean?
2. Is it hurting performance/gameplay?
3. What is going to happen as I continue to miss these updates?
4. Why would a cpu/graphics upgrade affect my connection?

Thanks in advance.

Try removing and doing a fresh install of AH2. That would be my first attempt to trying to fix it. Good Luck!

This is a bug in the current release (Version 2.00 Patch 6) of the game.  To work around it, after you login and if you get the message immediately about the protocol switch, then logout from the arena, and then log back in.
Do not quit the game.  Just logout and login to the MA.

Yeah, I just read another post that said it may have something to do with checking the load textures options. I did check those options after upgrading my PC thinking it would be better for performance. Is this correct or not? I just noticed how the game was not utilizing all my system or video memory so I thought that I would check them and see what happened. Should I leave them checked and do as you say (log out/in) for or just uncheck them for best performance?

Other than that error, the game seems to run great and I love playing it. Now if only I could land some more kills!

Checking the preload options helps performance.  Until we get the next patch out, just log off and back in again to get rid of the problem.
It has to do with timing.  Due to the time it takes to initially load all the textures for the game, the network code times out on UDP and switches to TCP.  Logging off then back on, and not exiting the game, gets rid of the switching to TCP due to the textures already being loaded.

I tried that Skuzzy, but in my case it goes and re-loads them.

The reload should be faster though as Windows will have cached the texture files.  It may not work in all situations, but it should work most of the time.

EDIT:  Connection, grab the test version in the Announcements forum.  It has this bug corrected.

This is from the 'There's one in every crowd' section.
No matter what I do, when I have preload to system memory checked I get 'not receiving updates, switching to TCP' message.
I did run AH2006test, I did go into arena then go out to arena screen and no change on re-entry. Also went out to passsword entry screen and back in with no change and I get message. Only way I don't is when it is unchecked.

AMD XP1500+ with 256Mb non-ddr ram, GeF4 Ti4200 64Mb ddr V card running 56.64s I believe..
I can deal with it though and just saying I get it.
