Like most U.S. planes, the P-38 was well armored.

Didnt argue that it wasnt.  But with 475 kills in a 38 for the tour, I only questioned a couple pilot wounds where I though the pilot should have been protected.  Without bullet strikes it is hard to tell where the offending hit penetrated the cockpit.

How was the P-38's pilot armor arranged?

In AH1 and AH2 the Mossie gets very frequent pilot wounds, especially against GVs.  The Mossie had an armored seat for the pilot, protecting him from behind and partially from below.  It had an armor plate in front of the cockpit and an bulletproof windscreen.  Hits from the top or sides only had to get through a thin layer of wood or through the perspex to hit the pilot.

The Mosquito FB.Mk XVIII with the 57mm cannon also had an additional 800lbs of armor.

and here is a cutaway of the nose.  While there isnt an engine chassie there, it isnt exactly a void space either.

So pretty much the same as the Mossie.  Completely unprotected from the sides and top.  Semi protected from below.  Good pretection from behind and in front.

I wonder why P-38 pilot wounds were so much rarer than Mossie pilot wounds in AH1?

ps. Got lots of mossie cutaway diagrams, but not an armor highlited one like that of the P38

I haven't seen a Mossie cutaway with armor shown either.  I'm going off of text descriptions.

I couldn't begin to tell you where the additional 800lbs of armor on the Mk XVIII went.  I've never even seen a text description of that, just that it had it.

a short burst of 50 cals or cannon into the cockpit should do some thing to your small dweeby body

i dont think P38 cockpit could withstand 50 cal burst into it to long or cannon

It's all that blood in the canopy -- very distracting.  If I ever was surrounded by that much of my own blood, I'd die of fright instantly.

Ah yes, well thats another thing halo.  The poor P38 pilots appearently dont bleed, because they dont get blood on their canopy.  (its not modeled for the 38 yet)

Sounds exactly like doing jabo runs in the Mossie.
