Tank gunfire problems
« on: July 27, 2004, 02:10:36 AM »
Ever since the new patch came out, there seem to be more panzer and tiger rounds bouncing off tagets (including lightly armored gv's) than there was before.  One instance in particular, every round i fired (about 20 or so) at a tiger from my panzer bouced off, regardless of where it hit, i used AP and HE rnds.  Then I switched to a tiger...2 rounds bounced i died from 1 single hit..losing 84 pts.  I wasnt the only one who couldnt kill this tiger...he last about 30 min before he finally got it.  Granted i was shooting at his front, from about 600yrds (or meters whatever the range is...between 4 and 8 on the range scale).  I have lost a tiger to single hit from the front so this problem should be looked into.  When one bounces a AP rnd off an M3..somethings wrong.

Each time a new patch is released a discription of the patch changes/additions is listed in the  News/Announcements forums.

From the patch 6 announcement:

"Made a change to the effect of obliquity on the armor penetration model. Impact angle has a more
pronounced effect on a projectile's armor piercing capability."

Freedom implies risk. Less freedom implies more risk.

I forgot to mention that i was on higher elevation shooting down while he was shooting up.  I didnt let the bottom of my tank get exposed either.

ok..my second complaint..this time it took me 71 ap rund to kill a tiger at close range...about 90% of the rounds bounced off regardless of where i hit it.  That is a little ridiculas...tigers werent that invicible.....I dont want to hear nothing about the patch i read it.

PS: The Panzer had a 76mm gun not a 75mm.  May not be much but sometimes 1mm can make a difference

Some of us in HTH came across the "invincible Tiger" as well... It was taking down a city point blank and without fear. So we all upped and about 3-4 of us swarmed the SOB in VERY heavy conditions. We dropped countless 500lb, 1k eggs, dozens of rockets, thousands of cannon rounds (from IL2s and heavy cannon planes, as well), and the bastard NEVER DIED, never disabled... he ended up taking down most of the town and the ONLY way to stop him was to cap his field of launch (which we did).

Some sorta BS going on there

There were NO 76mm guns mounted on Panzer Mark IV Tanks.  The Panzer we have mounted the 75mm KwK 40 main gun.

IIRC the only German 76mm guns were mounted on TDs (Marders, to be precise).

well, how is this:

today I drove up a Tiger behind a Panzer IV and hit him with AP from about 600 right into his six. It took me at least 12 rounds to kill him. I was causing all kinds of damage, he couldnt shoot back, lost tracks (when I switched to HE and hit the edges, as sometimes seems to have better effect than AP) and so on, but still. Most Panzers die with 1 or 2 88mm AP hits to the front, out to 1000 yds.
Only explanation I can think of: The heavy engine block stopped the rounds from inflicting fatal damage. I think I hit the turret, too (disabled it, so I must have) but turret penetration maybe doesnt count as "kill".

I haven't tried this in AH2, but I know from experience that in AH1 the penetrations to the rear of an enemy panzer would not kill them-at least not within any reasonable amount of hits/penetrations.
