Motherboard Question

Hiya,

i have a MSI K7N420 mainboard, and my manual says it will support processors up to 1800+MHz.  does the + behind 1800 mean that it can support processor speeds beyond 1800? if so is it a good idea to put a faster proccessor in this board, or do i need to upgrade the mainboard when i upgrade the processor? I currently have an Athlon XP 1800 in it.

hum..you are adding a question there that you don't apparently
already know about.  Athlon 1800's operate roughly at 1400Mhz

yes i did know that, but was interested in getting something a little faster that 1800MHz. am currently looking at mainboard bundles that come with motherboard, processor,ram,and cooling fan installed and tested. will probably be the best way for me to go.

Are u sure that it says it support 1800+ Mhz cpu speed?

MSI usually dont do that on there mobos, they go after the name on AMD cpu´s, alas ur mobo should therefor supports cpu up to a AMD athlon xp 1800+

yes that is the board i have.  sweet, maybe its worth keeping for a little while longer after all. don't know why i didnt think of just looking it up. thanx.

The 2600+ model that board supports does not exist any longer.  Originally the 2600+ was a 2.13 GHz 266 MHz FSB part.  It is now a 333 MHz FSB part, which that board does not support.

The fastest CPU you will be able to use on that board that is still made is the 2400+.

ok i checked pricewatch and can get a 2400+ for around $77. now another question. looking at ram there are all sorts. the mainboard says it supports 3 DDR DIMMS up to 1.5 GB. how do i know if i need PC 3700, PC 3200, PC 2700 etc? I have 512 on a single DIMM in it now, and depending on price of the ram i would go 1 or 1.5 GB. Thanx again guys.
