which broadband isp???
« on: August 02, 2004, 11:29:31 AM »
october 6th we get broadband. adsl

prob is which supplier to use in the uk.
most isp's inc british telecom have a 15gb upper limit £25.00. after that you pay for every extra gig.

aol are offering unlimited for the same price
or 1mb for £29.00.
the others above are 512k.

is there a good or bad reason to or not to choose aol?
cheers

Definitely stay away from aol!  I would not recommend BT Internet either, or Freeserve which is another one I would steer clear of.  We use  Zen who provide an excellent service, have several affordable packages and a 1-month minimum contract - so if you do decide you don't like them you are not held to 6 months or a year like other providers.  :)

I have also heard Nildram is pretty good.  They do seem to have pretty good routes.

Avoid Tiscali.

Zen are getting good customer feedback of late but i personally use Nildram 512k no bandwidth limits.

With Nildram my pings to AH are generally in the 110 to 120 ms range and only taking 11 hops if you discount my router.

It would definitely be worth asking for traceroutes or pingplots from customers of any ISP you consider to compare with these.
If Sprintlink shows in the routing be wary as they can adversly affect your gaming..

Hiya's,
Can't see location/area but are you capable of cable in area ?
Just got upgraded from 1meg to 1.5 from ntl @ £37.99 mth
No cap no warning emails etc
Though they do have a user policy etc but for me i d-load loads n never had a warning yet

Pings good i think (avg 110 not checked on hop numbers though)

If you can only get adsl i'd go with nildram also or checkout Eclipse (used to have unlimited 56k no cutoff etc and not a single outage or bad ping) they used to have no limit but with me getting cable i had no need to further check adsl

EDITED: just found this .... ECLIPSE 1meg (500 around £24 a mth btw)

Home 1000 The highest speed Home service, suitable for consistently high usage and larger home networks.  £58.75 SETUP £37.95 mth
NO CAP
