just got a comp couple weeks ago, its got:

intel 2.6ghz cpu
512mbs of ddr sdram
GF 5200fx vid card

i decided i wanted to upgrade the ram first to a gig, took me bought the wrong kinds few times took em back and fineally just took my stick into the local comp store and got another of the exact same kind.

but, when i snap em both into place, my system makes this horrible beeping sound, it wont even start up, screen just stays blank like the systems off and the system itself will beeeeeeeeeeep then stop about 2 secs and do it again.

sorry i know this isnt much info, but anyone got an idea of what im doin wrong or can give me some ideas as to what i can do ?

Make sure that the motherboard can support 1 gig of memory. Also take the old stick out and put the new in by itself to see if the stick isnt bad. If it works, then you may want to go to the motherboard manufacturer website and download a newer version of bios. Some motherboards dont support that much memory. What kind of MB do you have? (include the specs)

crucial.com Use the questionaire to direct you to the proper ram to use. (You were right, you have not posted enough info)

allright, i know its the right ram and it should be a good stick because i took the one i had into the comp store and go another exactly the same.

ok the MB is a MS-6540G (v2.X) Micro ATX Mainboard 661FM series

specs, this gonna take awhile.

CPU: socket 478 for P4 celeron/northwood cpu with FSB400/533/800Mhz up to 3.4 ghz.

chipset: SiS 661fx

main memory: 2 mem. banks using 184pin unbufferd DDR Dimms
supports up to 2gigs.

alright anything else just tell me what you need to know exactly.

Do what Meatwad suggested to determine you got two good sticks of ram. Also try different slots one at a time - sometimes a slot can not be working.

Look in motherboard manual to determine what combinations of ram are allowed (usually it is very flexible but not always, I am too tired to look that up riight now.

"Max Unbuffered DDR SDRAM: 2048MB" I see from the crucial link, depending on your MB you might be over max allowed, but I would have thought it would still boot - have never maxed a board out before.
