LW blackouts.......
« on: August 09, 2004, 11:40:14 AM »
Storch and I both have been noticing extended blackouts in LW planes. In particular the A6M5 the other day in CT.I was flying level at approx. 250mph when an f4 saddled up on my six.He was 600 ft behind when i turned right and I blacked out for 30 seconds(at least). When I came too I was going down in a shallow dive so i pulled up and blacked out again for 30 seconds. This time I ended up crashing. The f4 never fired a shot the whole time. Now I can`t speak on Storch`s account but he has had the same scenario. Is it a bug or is it normal?

Sounds normal.  Any extreme G pulling will almost Immediately make your pilot pass out.  The effect is cumulative as well.  So, if you are pushing the envelope in a dogfight and pull high G manuevers for too long, you will eventually pass out.  I have found (in the couple of times that it has happened to me) that once you totally black out, it is very easy to do it again seconds later.

The black out model is suppose to work as follows.

There are two types of blackout.
1. Unconsious black out (UBO)
2. Vission black out (VBO)

when in VBO, you still have complete control of your plane.
When in UBO, no controls are operational.

As long as you do not completly black out, I.E. never have VBO you should never have UBO. (except for pilot wound).

Once you enter VBO a fatagie factor starts rising, If you reach 3 secs of fatagie, you will enter UBO, UBO last for 10 secs.

If you did not reach UBO, and are not currently in VBO, Your fatagie factor recovers at 0.1 per sec, I.E. if you were in VBO for 1 sec, it would take 10 secs before your fatage factor went back to zero.

So to answere your question, if this is what is happening to you,
it is not a bug, if you are having somthing different please describe it.

From experience in these blackouts you have no control whatsoever.Even trying to use autopilot will not work.

that is a game feature, when in blackout you can no longer adjust throttle, or engage auto pilot. was implimented in one of the AHII betas.
I don't know what to put here yet.

You have entered the "UBO Zone".

Do not touch your controls ... you are no longer in control of your plane.

Trick is to hit 'X' just before total long blackout and pray. Good for pilot wounds.

"X" is "autotrim" not "autopilot". It means pilot adjust trimmers to keep flying straight. "autotrim" must turn off then pilot lost consciousness.

Nope if you hit x just before blackout it will fly straight and level.

I agree with Kev,I press Auto trim when I have a wound, just before blackout.I think it's ok,a pilot could and would trim his plane,if he thought he may be losing conciousness;that is he is not using an auto pilot, just trimming the plane for level flight.I once returned to base with a pilot wound after a long flight, the blackouts became more frequent, and as I landed-with great difficulty I might add-and turned off the engine,I got a message you have been killed.Eventually you die! From loss of blood. We will never know how badly your pilot is wounded and auto trim is a compromise solution to give him some chance of RTB.Landing a plane with a pilot wound is by no means easy, even with auto trim.

My opinion:)

First of all, autotrim provide too quick and easy way to "leveling". Try to level your plane with manual trim and you will understand it. Second, level flight need to constant adjusting trimmers and pilot could not (must not) do it until unconscious. Even autotrim until "vission black out" looks like "cheat", because pilot cannt see plane position relatively of horizon and cannt know how to trim plane to "leveling".

I had landed with pilot wound quite enough times and can say what nothing hard here (unlike landing w/o part of wing for example). Just some sort of lottery.

(sorry for my english)

HiTech,

I was flying a Ki-61, riding the edge of a blackout with only the small bit of sky and gunsight showing in the tunnel when I pulled a little to much and closed that off in a complete blackout.  I backed off on the stick immediately, I couldn't have been holding it completely blacked out for more than 1/4th of a second.  However I remained blacked out for a long time and was unable to manipulate the controls.

Does the four second timer start when there is any blackout effect on the screen or when the blackout completely covers the screen?  If it is the former I didn't encounter a bug, if the latter I did.
