OK this is the first draught of Lt. Col. Yost's F4U-1D. Still need to tidy up the weathering to match the markings.

Note there are a couple of bugs in the skin which create issues I can't get round. First the top and bottom of the fuselage are unmappable areas, so the two yellow stripes don't wrap all the way round. Also the white area at the back of the fuselage has a gap between the fin and fuselage.

A quick look on the web only revealed some images of diecast planes with this scheme. Does anyone have any photos of the real plane? I've guessed the plane had numbers on the undercarriage doors. Did the real plane have black walkways on the wings? Any other mistakes?

Trouble with looking at models is you are often just copying their mistakes. There's nothing like a good photo. Found this one of a VMF-351 Corsair. Looks like it should have yellow stripes on the wings too.

Found a photo, won't help much for a paint scheme, but maybe you'd be interested in having it.

This is a photo of Donald K  Yost taking off of CVE-109 "Cape Glouscester" in an F4U heading to to provide close air support to the troops at Iwo Jima.

Greebo how did you get the number on the gear door? Can you post a pic of the skin doc?

Now that is the rare picture i probably ever see and look like there is yellow stripes on the wings, but i probably wrong, but again look like it.  Good finding that picture, XtrmeJ

Thanks XtrmeJ, that's actually a very useful photo. Not only are there no stripes on the wing, but none on the fuselage either. The white area on the rear fuselage is missing too. Also it looks like the fuselage characters are bigger than I've got them. It appears one of the ammo hatches on the left wing has been replaced out of sequence. Basically its just blue with "FF 59" on the side.

Maybe the stripes were added later as CV ID markings or not all the planes had them. Losing the stripes and white area would solve the mapping problems although it wouldn't be as pretty. I'd feel happier submitting a skin with some photographic evidence to back it up though. What do you think Rafe?

As for the door numbers, I just shrunk the fuselage number and pasted them over the landing gear doors on the lower wing skins. They need to be rotated upside down as you look at the texture file and also mirror imaged left to right due to another bug in the F4U skin. Note you won't see the numbers on the doors with the undercarriage down, don't think the lowered doors are mapped.

This is what the door numbers have to look like in order to look right on the skin.

This is the Yost skin, minus stripes as in XtrmeJ's photo. No problems with skin bugs, but a less interesting scheme. Can change it back no problem.

Thanks greebo. I saw that but for some reason thought it would be on the doors when the gear was down. I still see that doest work.
