Just a thought!
« on: August 18, 2004, 09:44:15 AM »
Tried out the 2 week free subscription of WWIIonline recently, fairly impressed but I prefer AH. Funny, all the people writing about not being able to get a particular plane lately, I could hardly find a plane anywhere in that game.

But there was one thing that I liked there, and wondered what people's thoughts were.

I shot down a plane and there was no "you shot down Fred"
Got shot down with no "Fred shot you down."
(Fred is an example before you all jump on me).

Not knowing who you killed, or who killed you certainly takes away one negative part of the game. No messages:

"you HO dweeb"
"Fly a real plane"
"lucky S*B"
etc.; etc.;

I know you can turn off channel 200 and not have to put up with it, but some people like the banter oin that channel, and I have also received PMs cussing me out after killing someone.

I personally think that this detracts from the game and would not miss knowing who I killed or who killed me.

Ya I agree.  Although I don't lower myself to channel insults,
I sure harbor a little gut-resentment for the person who kills me.
Then again I also find it a good thing to write down the person's name and look it up in the roster to get a feel to the quality
of the players abilities (rank) to get a feel for what I was up against.  If it was a good player, I don't feel as bad.
All in all, though, I think your right.  Keep the kills and death's annonymous, or at least have the ability to turn off the incoming death message if you want.

Geeez, I would just as soon take out the ammo and have the cannons shoot out daisies than to do away with  knowing who you killed and who killed you.

well, that's what a large part of this game is supposedly about, interacting with other people online.  how much rivalry is there in ww2OL? as far as i understand they don't even allow cross country communications.

if i wanted anonymous gameplay, i'd go for a boxed sim.

you're welcome to lobby for say channel 201 as the "polite chat room channel" and try and convince those who are like-minded with you to tune that instead of ch 200.

in almost all sports and games rivalries and to an extent smack talk (head games) is what makes them so entertaining for many people.

ali?  mcenroe?  lawrence taylor? spurs vs lakers?  the more confrontational/"violent" a sport or game is, the more intense it can get. which is why you don't see golfers smacking at each other, except in very subtle ways.
Surrounded by suck and underwhelmed with mediocrity.
I'm always right, it just takes some poepl longer to come to that realization than others.

I've actually had some knockdown drag out PM wars over various BS. Can't think of a single one I ever initiated (sure there was at least 1 or 2) but boy I rose to the bait a few times. Actually enjoyed em most of the time and made a few "online friends" that way. I think pride in your performance is an important part of any game and that there is nothing wrong with being a "sore loser" occasionally. Obviously when it spills over to the "open channel" and is both vulgar and repetitive then its a community issue...98% of the time the guys mouthing off patch it up quickly.

I always felt having the squelch option made it easy to filter the garbage out. I always wanted to know who killed me, how else to you know who you have to hunt down. Think it took me about 80 hops before I ever killed -HR-. Cackled about it and spent the rest of the tour looking over my shoulder for him (thats usually where he was:mad: )...hehe

In America's Army there are no cross country communications while you are alive.  Once you die you then can cross country comm all you want (with other dead people).  Cuts down on a lot of the garbage, even in that game.

I often don't know what kind of plane I have shot down or what shot me down.  Especially now with the skins.  HAve wondered if we could have  instead of just "You have been killed by X"  you would get "You have Been Killed By X P51"
