FX53 in 939 or 940 configuration?
« on: August 17, 2004, 08:08:19 AM »
I see the 939s are more expensive, is that because the MBs are more compatible with other A64s or that they actually are fatser?

I wouldn't go with socket 940. They require expensive registered RAM and the mobos seem to be more expensive compared to 939.

Anybody have any information about possible AMD CPU price cuts following Intel's 22nd August cuts?

Are you sure those cuts are still planned? After they announced the delays in the 3.6G chips I figured they'd cancell the price cuts too.

Second question about 939 systems. I just sold $3,250+ worht of stuff on ebay. So I am going to buy the FX53 instead of the 3500 I was planning on getting (I already ordered my X800XT-256). Is PC3200 memory up to snuff for a high-end rig like that?

Edbert - For gaming FX53s are THE fastest thing out there. They are socket 939 which is replacing socket 754.
Socket 940 are the 'old' (lol) FX51 and Opteron series of CPUs.

FX53s are expensive because they are still relatively new are are AMD flagship non server CPU. They are still cheaper than a slower (unless your encoding) top of the range Intel P4EE (emergency edition).

One tip for the future - Next year AMD will realase their 'dual core' cpus. This will be two cpus on one die. Thus eliminating any specialised software to really take adavantage of a more than 1 cpu setup. Essentially they are 2 cpus built into one. They will only be available for socket 939/940.

DDR400 is all you need, unless you are planning to increase the HT bus (no fsb). The main conscern is that is should be the fastest, currently CAS 2, memory available. You will also need 2 sticks to take advantage of the dual channel memory option.
