LW boys.. notice an increase in yer ranks? :)
« on: January 20, 2000, 12:57:00 AM »
Tried a few LW planes last night.. the 109's are very very nice. reminds me of drivin a BMW.

I also noticed a damn sight fewer P51's about.. LOL.

I'm having some problems sorting out whats happened to the FW190.. it seems much more nimble than prev revisions, yet now is even slower?? Accel better; e retention surprised me.. Am I nuts? (6 sorties; 17 kills with it)

Very very nice 'feel' to it tho; great initial turn and it had no problems at all staying with a very well flown Mustang when I flew it last night. Also very forgiving.. no nasty snap rolls around the prop. Kinda miss those.

Surprising E retention too.. certainly better than the poor geldings. Went round and round with a stang and then climbed right over him when his e was done.. no trouble at all. Stang was faster.. but thats all. FW had him in accel; and that surprised me too.. not that the FW acclerated better.. that it did it so FAST in comparison.

All in all; I'd expect you LW drivers should be pretty pleased. These new planes are very competent!

I see a dramatic decrease in demand for P51D's in the arena in the immediate future.. selling my stock in NAA in the morning.

Actually, it is 190 that should be like BMW. 109 is just a Mercedes

I can't speak of 190, but I tried all versions of 109. I have to say, only G-10 can press the fight against a P 51D. Otherwise they just run away and I don't like the frustration

Had P 51 dive on my G-6, and he went for TnB, immediately expending his E advantage (overconfidence, for sure).

After some scissoring (rolling, mostly), I got on his six, shot his engine, but he dived away from me anyway. I caught him in his ack, quite a distance away from where our fight was. Killed him, ack got me, and got "great fight" on open channel. Yea, right

Since then, I'm in G-10 only.

As for fewer P51s, I agree. I have seen some dedicated P 51D pilots switched to Spits.

A Fully loaded Fw 190A is about 1500-2000 lb less than a P-51D, but it has slightly more power at sea level.  Low speed acceleration and climb rates are highly dependent on power and weight.

However the wing area on the Fw 190 is smaller.  The P-51D should have a small advantage (from physics, flight tests, and anectdotes) in sustained turning ability that becomes a large advantage above 18k where the P-51D starts to have more power than the Fw.

I've flown the 190 in 90% of my sorties in the last couple weeks.  One thing is does not do well is run away from the George at sealevel (Right Orion?   ) Another thing to never do is defensive juking under 150 ISA, then you will discover that nasty snap roll tendency.  If flown 'smart', 4-6 kills in a sortie is not hard to accomplish. I once had 10, but like most everyone that gets that many, it was due to field suppression (Vulching).

Fewer Stang piloys eh? Lubly jubly..i hate bein chased down by another stang. Seriously tho, the 51 has become harder to fly but it still retains its unbeatable speed and is great plane for newbies to develop e fighting and conservation skills. Then againt by .49 it might become a gelding

Dotsie.

Yah Dotsie.. on the money there.. The trend is very much on my mind. Speed alone don't make the stang a stang, and I doubt the plane has much more than 5 mph on some of it's competitors now. And with that hopeless accel.. well. It's hard bein a pony-boy these days.   I'm not gonna park it tho.. not by any means.
