How do you back up the aircraft?  I wasn't aware this worked anywhere, cv or not, as I don't think the planes have a setting for negative pitch on the prop.

I haven't tried it in Ah2. But, in Ah1 all you had to do was raise your throttle up just a little bitty bit. Enough to unlock your tail wheel. The wind would blow you backwards.

Brooke it is possible to back up on the CV.

What you do is apply a little bit of throttle, and once the tires start to roll you will roll  backwards. It happens because the CV is actually travelling into wind at 30knots (or 35, can't remember), and once you get the A/C moving it will roll backwards.

Not sure if it still works or not, but it should. Keep in mind that if you do this, you need to be carefull that you are backing straight, and that you also don't roll right off the back of the flight deck into the drink.

People used to use this procedure to get a  heavy F4U off the CV, although it didn't need the extra distance to take off if you did it right.

Just remimber one very important thing: DO NOT back up on the cv while your tailhook is deployed.  Doing so will catapult you backwards and into the ocean.

Don’t need a negative pitch. At just the right RPM the propeller creates a wall of turbulence that is moving backwards slower than the Ships forward momentum of 35 Knots or whatever it is. This wall being pushed against the wind created by the forward momentum of the CV at about 35 knots I think. Is enough to cause the Aircraft to stop its own forward momentum. Then what actually happens is that the CV sails out from under the AC.

No prob with F4u in AH2, not sure about F6f.   Back up does work though.

In AH2,  launching an F4UD with rockets, 1000 lbers, and 100% fuel from a carrier no longer requires rosaries, incense, or any other talisman.

I still use flaps and wep out of habit and fear, and the plane's nose doesn't even dip off the deck.

Gooss you are CORRECT sir :)

Although backing up signifies you are an OLD STICK with Aces HIgh, and may look cool,

it is NO longer necessary in Ah2 as all airplanes fully loaded will take off with no backing.

It is however worth noting that it is entirely possible to land Non-carrier based planes on a CV.

With the new fuel burn rate, some of you might like to know that you can refuel land based craft on a CV, the landing is tricky as there is no tailhook, but if you come in slow enuff, you can land. Then, back up as illistrated above, (careful not to get going too fast) stop within the catch lines for tailhook & you will be re-fueled.
