Just some information about the Spit IX in the game and its markings:
The plane belonged to the No 303 "Kosciuszko" Squadron RAF, a sqd that was made up of Polish pilots. These pilots fought valiantly against Germany during the invasion of their homeland, against Germany again in the Battle of France , then making their way to Britain where the Polish pilots where incorporated into the RAF command.
The 303 would become the highest scoring sqd in the Battle of Britain, achieving 126 confirmed kills, despite only particpating in the 2nd half of the campaign, before that they where fighting in many other RAF sqds before the 303 became official.
The pilot that flew this particular Spit IX, RF-M, was Jan "Kon" Falkowski. He would take command of the 303 in 1943, serving with the 32 and 315 squadrons beforehand and by wars end would become the the OC for the 3rd Polish Fighter Wing.
"Kon" which means "horse" in Polish was his nickname as he was known to his friends.
One amazing story about Jan Falkowski takes place on Sept 12, 1939. Lt. Jan Falkowski, who was an instructor at the Polish Aviation Training Center was flying a PWS 26 from Lublin to Sokal when 3 Bf 109's spotted his fabric covered biplane. The 3 109's anticpated an easy victory, but with Lt. Falkowski flying and the PWS 26 being fully aerobatic Lt. Falkowski put on a remarkable exhibition of flying. He outmaneuvered the advanced 109's causing one to crash and the other 2 to finally withdraw in frustation!
