Collisions??
« on: October 27, 1999, 10:20:00 AM »
I'm just curious but are collisions modelled
and if so are they set 'on' right now?
In all my flights I cannot remember once colliding with anyone and I thought for sure that two things I would hate about 'some other sim' would  be one, collisions and two, head ons. Sure headson suck and so do the folks who take them - except NateDog   - but if collisions are on they have not been a problem for me.

If they are on....how are they modelled and is there a different type of host message sent to indicate death by or from a collision?

 Thanks in advance.

Collisions are my number one complaint with WB AW and FA.They may not like SW here but the collision set up is perfect. And yes i have collided with planes.

I agree with TT.

I want (sorry HTC - couldn't think of an alternate way to phrase this   )friendly collisions and friendly fire also.

Want --> Translates ---> would appreciate a change to

I'd like to see friendly collisions on as well...but what do u do about two guys appearing on the runway at once?
I've had collisions w/nme already    Clipped a wing
My ms sidewinder 3d works great.  Every time I boot up though I have to go to control panel>game controllers> and hit properties to remind windows that my joystick's connected.  This sort of toejam is common with the sidewinder pro...I have no idea why and I've tried everything in the ms knowledge base to fix it.  Some midi ports just have trouble with it.  Can't wait for a USB version.  My sound card loads a gameport and windows loads a gameport, so I disable the card game port via device manager and leave the stick set to analog and it works.  According to the sound card maker, it shouldn't work.   I'm using a siig sound card, Yamaha chipset.  I shoulda bought an SB card, the yamaha was cheap though.

I don't know if this will work for you, but:

My Sidewinder Precision Pro USB is just a regular stick (15 pin gameport) with an adapter lead for the USB connection.

So possibly you could obtain said adapter, and latest drivers or something and use USB with your current stick? Or is your model of Sidewinder 3d just not USB capable at all?

PS: I have had zero problem with the anti-stick-stirring-code, must be because of the USB connection?

First let me say, IMO most rules and / or laws do not pertain to 99% of the people.  It is the 1% (or less) that dictate how the rest shall be controlled.  That 1% can create tremendous havouc.  Please keep this in mind for my discussion.

I was also hoping we could create a constructive forum, or brainstorm mode, to get friendly fire and collisions workably integrated into gameplay.

Treason is probably the biggest reason friendly fire is off.  The TreasonDweeb   committing the treason will be caught, and appropriatly be hanged.  (punnished or 86'd)  Placing HTC employees in the postion of judge and jury, this is also IMO bad.

By then however; another individuals experience has been ruined, the damage done regardless.  How easy would it be for this war crime to totally shut down an airfield at the spawn piont?

Incidental or accidental friendly fire is what I would like to see. IE: "Watch your aim you lose cannon, fireball casting Wizard, that hurts!".

To use friendly fire, the person doing the friendly fire would have to know he is committing it.  This is NOT realistic, but do to the consquences that would be forced upon abusers of friendly fire, would be a requirement.

Friendly fire is VERY realistic, and would change many strategies within the game.

Runway spawning is probably the biggest reason friendly collisions are off.  The issue of treason, also becomes a factor.

Realizing it is MUCH easier said then down, and probably already been done or thought of, my ideas for friendly fire and collisions are:

1) Set a timer, of say, 30 seconds after spawn or create a safe time limit.
2) A safe airspace bubble around the runways or create a safe zone.
3) Any friendly afflicted damage affects both the do'er and the done too, eye for an eye.
4) Drastically effect the players score in a negative manner.
5) A global announcement via the HOST "TreasonDweeb, flying for the Schmuck's, has just wacked a buddy".
6) Allow the offender to discover how frustrating Net Lag can REALLY be, delay all actions withing the arena, for a timed period.

I would like to see this work.

The air traffic control question is solved fairly easily:  disallow friendly collisions under 250' AGL.  That way planes can taxi through each other and even take off through one another.  Rapidly, though, collisions would become enabled.

That might see a general adherance coming onto final from a given direction so T/Os and landing don't bump into each other over 250'AGL.

The real problem, however, comes in formation flying.  With net lag and connections being what they are, it would be next to impossible to fly tight formations (necessary for buffs, for instance) if friendly collisions are enabled.

I too am all for friendly collisions, but I am not sure the technology is up for it.

With regards to friendly fire, Warbirds has a "kill shooter" that works well: fire into a friendly plane and you take the corresponding damage.  Realistic?  Hell, no, but there is an immediate penalty for an offender not being cautious with the trigger if in combat, plus there is no negative effect on the victim.  It is turned off in the Historical Arena where friendlies can shoot each other; it is much less populated however, and doesn't tend to attract the less serious flight sim enthusiasts.

Cheers
