Wingman Extreme fixes?
« on: August 25, 2004, 06:12:12 PM »
I've got a Wingman Extreme Digital 3D.

Yeah, yeah, I know.

What I'm WONDERING is if there is ANY fix out there, anywhere, at all, that involves software, hacking software, any hardware, if I can open this thing up and fix/treak/fiddle with anything. I'm not totally in the know when it comes to such things but I know how to take electronics apart and put 'em back together, at least. Is there some physical problem that can be fixed, at all?

Never mind. I took the handle apart. Couldn't get the base to separate. But the twist control is built halfway up the control stick anyways. It was education and easy to see why it is such a piece of crap. The twist mechanism is pure crap. Anyways, I think a pinched wire may have explained why I only got half motion in my left rudder, but there's 1) no guarantee it won't happen again anyways and 2) still a big 5-degree range of motion before the freakin' servo kicks in anyways.

Really shoddy work. And that doesn't even touch the "move on one axis and you will spike all 4 violently) problem -- which I chalk up to REALLY poor electronics (bad chips).

So, to make a long story short: There's nothing to fix. It's just bad product.

P.S. Unless you're technically inclined and like problem solving like I do, do NOT take your wingman extreme apart. It gets tricky re-assembling it.

P.P.S. At least for the immediat minute, it calibrates better for my breaking it down and rebuilding it. Go figure. It won't last, however.

The rudder pot can be cleaned, and the wires to the pot reconnected when they break.  I've had the whole thing apart and put it back together.

But yes, the rudder axis design is crap.  I owned 3; rudder axis went on all of them.  Eventually I just bought a set of CH rudder pedals and disabled the rudder axis on the Wingman.  That's what I'd recommend doing.
