Major FPS Problems/Skuzzy..anyone please Help
« on: November 08, 2004, 05:00:39 PM »
System specs are as follows
XP2500+ Mobile Barton Overclocked to 2.4Ghz
512MB PC3000 Kingston Hyper X
Shuttle A35N-Ultra Nforce 2 Ultra 400
Latest Nforce Drivers
Built by ATI Radeon 9800Pro
Latest Omega Drivers
WD 80GB SE
XP Pro SP1 loaded

I am getting below 50FPS and sometimes below 10FPS on any given map, 1280x960 no AA or no AF. This is a fresh  install of XP, and all the drivers.  AHII is the only game that this occurs, I scored over 40,000 in AquaMark3D, Counter Strike source I get anywhere from 60-100FPS @1280x960 2xAA.  Rome Total War runs perfect.  I have run memtest86, prime 95 for 24 hours and have not encountered a single error so I know the system is stable. What gives?  It just isnt even worth playing this game with suck poor FPS.

The only thing that could possibly be lacking is your processor, but don't take my word for it.

I've read that once you get a good video card, such as yours, AHII becomes much more processor dependant.

it could be because of the server/intardnet problems we've been having for the last week also .

Evey now and then my FPS just go into the gutter and the game starts stutering and all sorts of weird things happen .

my fps normally run around 80 with a low of 35-40

There's nothing wrong with a 2500+ M barton,  i run one and believe me it can go alot higher then 2.4ghz If its set up/and cooled correctly.

Then make sure you have the "Preload textures to memory" option checked.
Set the maximum texture size to 256.
Set the video resolution to 1280x1024

Also go into the Windows Task Manager and note the number of processes running (lower left hand corner).  Should be aroun 19 or so.
Note the CPU usage as well.  It should bounce from 0 to 1-2% every 5 or 6 seconds.  If it is outside of that, you have other things running in the background chewing up CPU cycles.

Nothing out of the ordinary running in background., I have since upgraded to 1Gig of PC3200, I did as you suggested.  No change.  In the tower FPS are in the 40's, If I look straight up at the blue sky I get over 300FPS.

Have you tried stock ATI drivers?

Do you have the latest nvidia forceware drivers for your motherboard chipset?

Why 1280x960?  Try one of the standard resolutions like 1280x1024 or 1024x768.

If you get 300 fps looking up, then vsync has been disabled.  Turn it back on because it doesn't get you anything but problems in AH.  Set your monitor refresh rate to 75 or whatever your monitor supports at your gaming resolution, and be happy with that as a maximum.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

I just pulled a xp 2500+ that was running a 2.3ghz out of my system and upgraded to a 64 3400+ . talk about night to day . I was amazed at the performance increase in AH2 . i run a 9800pro, and i was going to replace the video card till skuzzy and a few others said i was prolly cpu limited . They sure were right. now my frames werent 40 in the tower , but they would definetly slow way down  on the deck in a furball, i couldnt run defaults. I had to turn ground range almost all the way off..... now with the new chip, if they drop 5-6 frames in a big furball over a smokin base thats alot . Ive tested every cat from 4.1 to 4.10 with the 2500 barton setup, and the best ive found is the omega cats based on the 807 beta and the 4.24 nforce driver combo   my 2 cents 38
