Nvidia 6800 vs ATI 9800PRO
« on: September 15, 2004, 04:03:19 PM »
Is the price diff worth it, or are they close in performance?

What would AH prefer?

I know the 6800 prolly is faster, but by how much? and does it require alot better PSU?

The ones I have seen do have tremendous image quality but only if you have the juice to run them. In fact that is what I put on the Christmas wish list. Well that an a new car...

I asked this same question three weeks ago and got zero responses. Got the impression there are not many people out there playing with 6800 cards.

I read that some 9800 Pros can be soft modded/ overclocked to XTs. Might be something to look into to save some money and still get XT performance.

Got any more info on that mod there boat?

I thought the 6800s were supposed to play in the X800 realm not the 9800. I saw some reviews/benchmarks on the X800XT versus the 6800s that showed that Nvidia has the lead again. I'd expect the 9800XT to be destroyed byt the 6800 assuming the CPU is not an issue.

just remember that there is a huge diff between 6800, 6800GT and 6800UT. Only the last one can reach up to x800xt in some tests.

Go with a 6800 hands down. Here's my system

3200+ XP with 400 Mhz FSB
1 GB DDR Ram
SB Live!
Windows XP Home
450W Power Supply

Originally I had a ATI Radeon 8500. It was able to score a measly 92 in 3D Mark 2003, and could play some older games life Counterstrike and such. Upgraded to an ATI X800 and I wasn't too happy. Out of the box it scored a 6700 on 3D Mark 2003 and choked up on Doom 3 and Far Cry. I returned it for a 6800GT. Out of the box scored a 11,000 in 3D Mark 2K3 and i'm playing Doom 3 at 1024x786, Ultra Deatil, 8X FSAA, and 16X filtering with no problems at all. Very pleased with this card, will def. be buying Nvidia in the future...

True! I have one!

You want the MSI version of the 9800 Pro. And specifucally, you want the older version that  has a green PCB, a HUGE heatsink, and doesn't look like the ATI reference design. It is also pleasantly quiet.

Mine does indeed have the R360 core (as opposed to the R350 core), and it clocks up to well past stock 9800XT speeds. The only drawback is that it comes with 128 MB ram as opposed to the XT's 256.

A url with this version is at:
http://www.mypcgoodies.com/details.asp?item=MS10R9800PRO

and it is a good price too.

This store looks like it is selling another version of the same board:

http://www.imagestore.us/product.asp?pf_id=HY%2D9800XT128

Now, MSI has stopped selling this custom version with the R360 and is selling the "reference design" board again, so stores are refreshing their stocks. If you are interested in this card, GET IT NOW.

Like I said, I love mine.

Anandtech has a  GPU Shootout  that probably should be considered required reading for anyone looking at new graphics cards.  Page five especiallly, has a chart that list all current cards by performance. based on the 9600 Pro being equal to 100%

The 9800 Pro comes in at 202 and the XT rates a 218. The plain GF 6800 scores 272. My feeling is the real winner will be the 6600 GT when they make it in an AGP version (only PCI Ex. right now). It will sell for about the same price as a 9800 Pro and is a "next generation" card that scores 241.

Of course, if you have the bucks to burn, the GF 6800 UE tops the list with a score of  475.
